Madam,

A question on a different subject. Recently, there is talk of Betelguese (Arudra) dimming in brightness quite substantially, raising curiosity that it might be heading for the supernova stage. (Considering the fact that it takes 600 years for the light from Betelguese to reach us, some even guess that it might have already happened, and we could/would come to know within the next 600 years!).

Assuming that it explodes and disappears, what do you think would be the astrological consequences, as Arudra is a very important star in the Vedic calendar.

Dear Mr Raghu,

The most recent research says that the star indeed is not dying. What is detected as death pangs are actually the signs of Betelgeuse eating up its companion star. Read my old article wherein I have updated this and other other researches / info: http://jayasreesaranathan.blogspot.com/2011/01/are-we-going-to-have-second-sun.html

Rudra the lord of Arudra star is the Time keeper of life. As such the star's existence marks life on earth. The present Kalpa being the day time of Brahma, in which half the day is gone, we are left with another half which is equal to approximately 2.5 billion years. In the life time of the Sun of 10 billion years, this spans across the 3rd quarter of its life which is perfectly reasonable to sustain life atleast until then. Therefore I foresee Arudra to be alive and kicking for another 2 billion years minimum.

Arudra signifies water or rainfall that is vital for life. Aardra in sanskrit means wet and moisture. When the sun transits another wet star, i.e. Puradam whose lord is Apa or Varuna, and the moon crosses Arudra, signifying wetness, one can assess the mind of Time (of Rudra) whether He is going to grant us enough rainfall in the upcoming year. From Arudra Darshan (Moon becoming Full in Arudra in Margazhi) to Arudra Pravesha (when the sun enters Arudra in AAni month) the kind of meteorological features prevalent become the cause for rainfall experienced between Arudra Pravesham (Aani) and Arudra Darshan (Margazhi). As such the relevance of the Star Arudra is more profound in meteorological and mundane astrology.

Madam,
Thank you for your prompt response. Let us hope the second sun never arises.
