The month begins with average to below average astrological features for rainfall and improves in the 2^nd fortnight with mixed features. The negative features weigh over positive features in general.

Rainfall spoiling features:-

1. Venus and Mercury are 66 degrees away from each other on 1^st August. This distance gets reduced only towards the end of the month. The closeness begins on 27^th August and continues throughout the month of September and ends on 8^th October. After a lean period, the revival of SWM can be expected on 27^th August.

2. Transit of Venus in Nirjala nadi between 12^th August to 24^th August. Venus will be in Punarpoosam (Punarvasu) during this period. This will see cloudy days but lack of rains. Clouds gather but would remain subdued.

3. Entry of Mars in Leo happens towards the end of the month on 27^th and 28^th when Venus- Mercury closeness begins.  Mars in Leo (fiery sign) and particularly in the star of Magha reduces rainfall and causes hot conditions. Sun and Mars will be together in Leo from then onwards for a fortnight. This will upset rainfall.

4, Absence of any kind of trigger during most part of the month for a meteorological activity to ensure good rainfall Venus, Mercury and Sun are away from each other most of the time, until month-end.

Rainfall supportive features:-

1. Mars, Sun and Saturn are in alternating signs which happen to be watery signs indicating North. North India continues to be in the line of rainfall. When Moon comes in 5^th, 7^th and 9^th houses to these planets, there will be rainfall in the region indicated by the sign and the stars transited by these planets. This alternating combination continues till 16^th August. On 17^th August Sun shifts to the next sign.

2. Mercury makes 2 moves – one is retrogression that starts on 13^th August and the other is Mercury getting into combustion with Sun. This starts on 17^th August. Both these dates are capable of triggering rainfall.

3. Mercury crosses Sun on 26^th and 27^th – which indicate a trigger to a meteorological activity.

4. Venus- Mercury closeness begins on 27^th August and continues steadily closing the gap between them.

Outlook for Chennai.

Chennai is likely to fare better in August compared to July.

The Garbottam chart is given below.

The dates from August 16^th to 20^th are blue tinted.

This is to show a peculiar connection between the Garbottam dates and rainfall dates. As Lunar dates are piling up leading to an Adhik Masa next year, we come across split lunar phases in the solar month. Due to this, instead of the usual 6 and a half month gap (between Garbottam and rainfall), a 5 and a half month gap has started setting in.

The Garbottam of March 8^th and 9^th gave rain on July 19^th and 20^th which should be originally related to Feb 8 and 9^th.

For those willing to learn how this happens, let me explain it.

Garbottam was observed on March 8^th and 9^th.

This was on waxing Ekadasi and Dwadasi (in Maasi month)

Counting from Maasi, 6^th month was Aadi and we have to see waning phase of Aadi for the corresponding dates of rainfall.

Ekadasi and Dwadasi in waning phase occurred in the beginning of Aadi, that is on 19^th and 20^th July.

If one observes the dates in the above table, after August 15^th, the date jumps back to July 19^th and 20^th. This backward jumping continues in August till the date that corresponds to March 13^th when the next lunar phase began then.

In the last month Garbottam chart, there was no clue for rainfall on July 19^th and 20^th. But now when I was going through the next period of Garbottam I could see justification for it in Garbottam of March 8^th and 9th.

This kind of jumping backward is likely to continue till we cross Adhik Masa next May. 

We have to watch whether this has any impact on rainfall, leading to its reduction.
