Why Amman festivals are popular in the month of Adi.

Given below is my article (in Tamil) on why worship of Amman is popular in the Tamil month of Adi (Sun in Cancer). This was published in the Adi issue of Poojari Murasu circulated among temple priests of Tamilnadu.

As the first month of dakshinayana, Adi begins with the worship of Mother Goddess. Amman festival as it is found today started after 1800 AD as a sequel of Kannagi episode.

Kannagi lost her husband in the month of Adi. To avenge that death, she set fire to Madurai on a day that happened to be the last Friday of Adi when moon was transiting Kritthika on a Krishna Ashtami. (waning phase). The city was devastated and people continued to suffer after that incident. There were no rains and people were stricken with heat related diseases such as measles. The King Neduncheziyan had died on the throne on hearing the mistake he had committed in ordering death sentence for Kovalan, Kanangi's husband. He was succeeded by his brother 'Verri vel cheziyan' who conducted a Shanthi Homa for calming down Kannagi who by then had left the earthy plane.

That homa was conducted in one Adi month. Kings of Lanka (Kayabahu) and Malwa attended that Homa. After the completion of Homa, it rained and diseases vanished. The country and its people came back to normalcy. Seeing this, Kayabahu started the tradition of Puja to Kannagi in Lanka in the month of Adi. The Kosars of Kongu nadu (Coimbatore region) also did the same. In this way worship of Kannagi spread throughout Tamil speaking lands.

The importance assigned to Fridays in Adi for the worship of Amman and Fire-walk in the last Friday of Adi seem to be the result of Kannagi-effect on Tamils.

Worship of female Gods had been there even before Kannagi's times, but restricted to certain regions of deserts (paalai) where Goddess KoRRavai was worshiped. This Goddess had a special presence in Tamilnadu  right from Sangam times. There was a sangam poet by name "Thee mithi Naganar" whose name shows that he had done fire-walking. So these features had already been there. But the wider presence of Amman festivals with fire-walking seems to have come into vogue after Kannagi.

Kannagi was called as Mangala Devi who could grant wishes of Mangalyam. (I have related this feature in my old posts on Mangalya Dharanam.). Perhaps this resulted in the practice of changing the old Mangal sutra with a new one in Adi.

அம்மனுக்கு உகந்த ஆடி.

ஆடி மாதம் என்பது அம்மனுக்கு உகந்த மாதம் என்பதைச் சொல்லத் தேவையில்லை. ஆனால் ஆடிக்கு அந்த முக்கியத்துவம் ஏன் வந்தது என்பதைச் சொல்லவே இந்தக் கட்டுரை.

ஆடி மாதத்தில் தட்சிணாயன புண்ய காலம் ஆரம்பிக்கிறது. சூரியன் தனது தென் திசைப் பயணத்தில் செல்லும் காலம் இது. இந்த ஆறு மாதங்களுமே வழிபாடுகளுக்கும், விரதங்களுக்கும் பெயர் போனவை. லௌகீக விஷயங்களுக்கு உத்தராயணமும், ஆன்மீக விஷயங்களுக்கு தாட்சிணாயனமும் என்று பிரித்துக் கொடுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. இதற்கு முக்கியக் காரணம் விண்வெளி அமைப்பில் இருக்கிறது.

தட்சிணாயணத்தில் இருக்கும் ஆறு மாதங்களிலும் நாம் இருக்கும் பால் வெளி காலக்ஸியின் ஊடே சூரியன் செல்கிறான். அதாவது, ஆடி மாதத்தில் சூரியன் சஞ்சரிக்கும் கடக ராசி முதல், அதைத் தொடர்ந்து வரும் சிம்ம்ம், கன்னி, துலாம், விருச்சிகம், தனுசு ஆகிய ராசிகள், நாம் இருக்கும் காலக்ஸியின் நட்சத்திரக் கூட்டங்களாகும். இந்த ராசிகளில் உள்ள நட்சத்திரக் கூட்டங்கள் நம்முடன் பிறந்தவர்கள் போலாவார்கள். இந்த நட்சத்திரக் கூட்டங்களுங்களிலிருந்துதான் நாமிருக்கும் சூரிய மண்டலம் உண்டானது. எனவே நாம் வாழ்வதற்கு வகை செய்த இந்த ராசிகளின் ஊடே செல்லும் பொழுது, நம்முடைய மூலத்தை வணங்கும் வண்ணம், பலவிதமான ஆன்மீகக் கடமைகளை ஏற்படுத்தி இருக்கிறார்கள். அவை ஆடியை முதலாகக் கொண்டு ஆரம்பிக்கின்றன.

ஆடி என்னும் பெயருக்குக் கண்ணாடி என்பது பொருள். ஒரு பெரிய மலையைக் கூட ஒரு சிறு கண்ணாடிக்குள் காட்டிவிட முடியும். அது போல ஆன்மீக முன்னேறத்தை மட்டுமல்ல, இம்மை இன்பத்தையும் ஆடி மாதத்தில் செய்யும் அம்மன் வழிபாடுகளால் அடைந்து விட முடியும்.

ஆரம்பம் என்பது தாயிலிருந்து பிறக்கிறது. ஆன்மீக காலமான தட்சிணாயனமும் தாயை முன்னிட்டு, அம்மனை வழிபட்டு ஆரம்பிப்பது பொருத்தமே. உயிர் வாழ அவசியமான நீரைக் கொண்டு வரும் ஆறு, தாய் போன்றவள். மழைக் காலத்தை அறிவிக்கும் வண்ணம், முதல் மழை நீரை அந்த ஆற்றுத்தாய் பெருக்கெடுத்துக் கொண்டு வரும் போது அவளுக்கு ஆடிப் பெருக்கு ஆராதனை நடக்கிறது.

அந்த நேரத்தில் செய்யும் வேண்டுதல், ஆறு மாதங்களுக்கு முன்னால் மார்கழி மாதத்தில் ஆற்றங்கரையில் ‘அம்பாவாடல்’ என்று தாயுடன் சேர்ந்து கன்னிப் பெண்கள் செய்த பாவை நோன்பை ஒத்திருக்கிறது. அப்பொழுதும் தீர்க்க சுமங்கலியாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்றும் நல்ல கணவன் வர வேண்டும் என்றும் வேண்டுவார்கள். ஆடிப்பெருக்கின் போதும் அதே வேண்டுதலைச் செய்கிறார்கள். புதுத்தாலி என, தாலியைப் பிரித்துக் கட்டிக் கொள்ளுதல் ஆடிப் பெருக்கின் போது இன்றும் நடை பெற்று வருகிறது.

தீர்க்க சுமங்கலியாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று வேண்டிக் கொள்ளும் ஆடி மாதத்தில், கணவன் மனைவியை ஏன் பிரித்து வைக்கிறார்கள் என்ற கேள்வி எழாமல் இல்லை. ஆடியில் கருவுற்றால், கடுமையான சித்திரை வெயிலில் குழந்தை பிறக்கும். அதனால் இப்படி ஒரு விதிமுறையை எற்படுத்தி இருக்கிறார்கள் என்று சொல்லலாம். ஆனால் உண்மையில் வேறொரு காரணம் இருக்கிறது.

அது நடந்து 1800 ஆண்டுகள் ஆகி விட்டன. அப்பொழுது வந்த ஒரு ஆடிமாதம் மறக்க முடியாத மாதமாகத் தமிழ் மக்களுக்கு இருந்தது. அந்த ஆடியில்தான் கண்ணகியின் கணவன் கோவலன் கொலை செய்யப்பட்டான். அதற்கு நீதி கேட்ட கண்ணகியால், ஆடி மாதம் தேய்பிறை அஷ்டமி, கிருத்திகை நட்சத்திரம், கடைசி வெள்ளிக் கிழமை கூடிய நாளில் மதுரைக்குத் தீ வைக்கப்பட்ட்து. அதன் தொடர்பாக தமிழ் நிலங்களில் பலருக்கும், தொழு நோய் மற்றும் அம்மை போன்ற வெப்ப நோய்கள் ஏற்பட்டன. எங்கும் மழை பெய்யவில்லை. வரட்சியும், சாவும் மக்களை வாட்டின.

இதிலிருந்து மீள்வதற்காக அப்போது அரசுக் கட்டில் ஏறிய பாண்டிய மன்னன் வெற்றி வேல் செழியன் என்பவன் கண்ணகிக்குப் பலி கொடுத்து, சாந்தி பூஜை செய்தான். அதன் பயனாக மழை வந்தது, நோய் நீங்கியது. மக்கள் துன்பம் நீங்கியது. இதைக் கண்ட கொங்கு மண்டலத்துக் கோசர்கள் என்பவர்கள், தங்கள் பகுதியிலும் இதே போல பூஜைகள் செய்ய ஆரம்பித்தனர். பாண்டிய மன்ன்ன் செய்த பூஜையில் இலங்கை மன்னன் கயவாகு என்பவனும் கலந்து கொண்டான். அவனும் இந்தப் பூஜையை ஒரு ஆடி மாதத்தில் தன் நாடான இலங்கையில் ஆரம்பித்தான் என்று சிலப்பதிகாரம் கூறுகிறது. அது முதல் ஆடி மாதத்தில் கண்ணகிக்கும், நாளடைவில் அவளது அம்சமாக ஆங்காங்கே அம்மனுக்கும் விழாக்கள் எடுக்க ஆரம்பித்திருக்கின்றனர்.

ஒரு ஆடி மாதத்தில் கண்ணகி கணவனை இழந்தும், அதே ஆடி மாதத்தில் அவளது கோபத்தால் மக்களுக்கும் துன்பமும் வரவே, ஆடி மாதத்தில் அம்மனுக்குப் பூஜை செய்வது மட்டுமல்லாமல், கணவனுடன் சேராமல் இருக்கும் வழக்கமும் ஆரம்பித்திருக்கும். தான் இழந்தவற்றைத் தன்னை அண்டியோருக்குத் தருவதில் அவள் கருத்துடன் இருப்பாள் என்பதால், தாலி மாற்றும் வழக்கமும் இந்த மாதத்தில் ஏற்பட்டிருக்கும். கண்ணகிக்கு மங்களா தேவி என்றுதான் பெயர். அவளைப் பூஜிப்பதால் மங்களமும், சுமங்கலித்துவமும் ஏற்படும். நாளடைவில் கண்ணகியின் பெயர் மறைந்தாலும், அவளுக்குச் செய்த பூஜையை ஏற்கெனெவே இருந்த அம்மன் கோவில்களிலும், அல்லது புதிதாக அம்மன் கோவில்களை உருவாக்கியும் செய்திருக்கிறார்கள்.

வெள்ளிக் கிழமையில் அவள் எரியூட்டியதால், வெள்ளிக் கிழமை பூஜைகள் முக்கியத்துவம் பெறுகின்றன. ஆடி மாதக் கடைசி வெள்ளியில் எரியூட்டவே, கடைசி வெள்ளிக் கிழமையில் தீ மிதி விழா எடுப்பது வழக்கத்தில் வந்திருக்கிறது. கண்ணகியின் காலத்துக்கும் முன்பே கொற்றவை என்னும் பெண் தெய்வ வழிபாடு இருந்திருக்கிறது. ஆனால் கண்ணகியின் கதை, தமிழ் பேசும் மக்கள் அனைவரையும் உலுக்கி விடவே, அவள் நினைவாக ஆங்காங்கே ஆரம்பித்த அம்மன் வழிபாடு தமிழ் நாட்டில் மட்டுமே நடந்திருக்கிறது. அந்த வழிபாடு நடக்கும் ஆடி மாதத்திற்கான கடக ராசிக்கு அதிபன் சந்திரன் என்பதால், வெள்ளை நிற உணவாகக் கூழ் ஊற்றுதல் பிரசித்தம் பெற்றது. 

அம்மன் வழிபாட்டால், கண்ணகி கதையில் கூறப்பட்ட நலன்களான, மழை வளம், வெப்ப நோய் தாக்காமை, சுமங்கலித்துவம் ஆகியவை ஏற்படுகின்றன. ஆனால் ஒன்றை நினைவில் வைத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். கண்ணகி போல அம்மனிடமும் தவறு செய்யக்கூடாது. தவறு செய்தால் தண்டனை நிச்சயம். ஆனால் நேர் வழியில் வாழும் மக்களுக்கு அம்மன் அருள் என்றும் இருக்கும்.

Astrological views on Mumbai blasts (July 13, 2011)

Any act does not come into existence just like that. There are factors behind that making it happen. These factors are thought, word and action which we see from 5^th (thought), 2^nd (word ) and 10^th (action) houses in the natal horoscope. A similar principle works in mundane astrology also. The thought is manifest in the skies and the word and action are manifest in the people on the ground. As such terror attacks follow some specific combination of planetary rules, the analysis of which is becoming relevant nowadays. I call this as investigative astrology and am keeping track of events from 1993 Mumbai blasts onwards. There are certain repeated astrological combinations which I have classified from different angles. Based on that I thought I can give some clues on the cause of the attack and the intentions of the attackers.

There is a view that 13^th and 26^th seem to be the preferred dates of the attackers. The attack on the Indian parliament happened on 13-12-2001. In 2003 an attack happened in Mumbai on March 13^th. In 2008, Jaipur bore the brunt of  a terror attack on May 13^th and Delhi on September 13^th. But if we look at the dates, nearly half the terror attacks in India had happened in the second half of the month. If you check the wiki article on list of terror attacks, 18 out of 43 had happened in the second half of the month. 26^th has a particular presence in natural calamities such as earth quakes and tsumanis also. It is because they most often come on specific thithis (lunar days) in specific months. Actually the basis lies in lunar or solar days rather than the dates of the Gregorian calendar.

Similarly if we check the day of terror attack, yesterday's attack is rare as most terror attacks have happened on week ends or week- beginnings – presumably targeting more people. As far as India is concerned most terror attacks had happened on Thursdays! Saturday and Tuesday also are in the list. Similarly the ruling planet of the star of the day when the terror has stricken has been Jupiter on most occasions, followed by Saturn and the nodes. Yesterdays's terror struck on the star of Ketu!.

In India's Vimshoththari dasa system, Venus and Ketu connection had been there on most occasions of terror. Venus dasa saw the most terror attacks. The Ketu antar dasa in Venus Maha dasa had more number of terror attacks. The current Sun dasa must be a peaceful one as Sun  is in the 4^th house in the bhava chart, which also happens to be its own house. Sun in the star of 2^nd and 5^th lord Mercury will not wreck havoc for large part of its dasa. The current bhukthi lord Rahu is in the star of Sun, making it a mixed bag of events. Rahu being the sub cuspal lord of 2^nd, 6^th and 10^th houses and positioned in the house of Venus, has helped in keeping the rulers under check and can even help in recovery of black money from abroad.

The Home minister  made a statement that India was relatively calm in the first half of this year. It is because of this and the general planetary combinations.

For Indian conditions, the foremost requisite for a terror-free atmosphere is Jupiter which must be free of affliction and also positioned in benefic signs. Yet another requisite is the absence of affliction to a sensitive point called antiscion of the Sun. This point keeps moving with the movement of the Sun. Fortunately for the last six months, the antiscion of the sun was free of affliction. That is why even though a few instances of blasts were reported in the first half of this year, the casualties and the intensity of blasts have been very less. But the time is changing for a brief period now. From 26^th July onwards, the antisicon of the Sun is going to be afflicted by the malefics which will be there for the next 3 months.

Yesterday's blast was a little different from the terror attacks of the past, because the most important Jupiter was relatively safe and unafflicted. Let me give my check list before I proceed.

For a terror attack to happen (in Indian conditions – I say this based on the Indian natal chart of Independence) the following must be present:-

• ·         Moon must be afflicted (for human sufferings to happen.) In the absence of this one clause even if other clauses were to be present, the terror attack will fail or causalties will be nil or very low. 
  

• ·         Jupiter must be afflicted.

• ·         Antiscion of the Sun must be afflicted.

• ·         Terror time lagna lord and 8^th lord must  be afflicted.

• ·         The lagna lord and 8^th lord and or the 8^th house must fall in ayudha, sarpa or fiery drekkanas.

• ·         The 22^nd drekkana and 64^th navamsa lords must be afflicted.

• ·         Brighu bindu must be afflicted or the planetary lord of the Brighu bindu degree must be afflicted.

• ·         Affliction to shunya rasi for the thithi in which the terror occurs

• ·         Malefics in Mrithyu bhaga and /or malefics transiting Rohini. (additional feature and not always possible)

• ·         The malefics such as Saturn, Mars and the nodes causing the above afflictions besides being connected among themselves. In worst terror attacks, they will be in 6-8 axis or 2-12 axis with each other.

In all the terror attacks in the past, one can see all the above being present. (There are justifications for the above factors to be related to a terror attack. I am not going into those details as it will take many articles to explain.)  Based on these factors it is possible to interpret the cause of terror which in most occasions was to pose a challenge to the Government, as terror attacks are modern day versions of war on government. The modes operandi is to the attack and terrorize  the innocent people with an aim to make them lose confidence in the government. There are other reasons also which I have classified in the Indian scenario, but the most common cause is this.

But on only one occasion in the past the cause of attack was to wreck personal vengeance. On 23^rd November 2007, about 6  blasts occurred in the court premises of  Lucknow, Varanasi and Faziabad. The attacks were a retaliation for the arrest of terrorists and for the reason that no lawyers came forward to defend them. Indian Muhajideen claimed responsibility for that attack. In fact use of ammonium nitrate and IED were seen in the past in the attacks by Indian Mujahideen and a Bangladeshi outfit, Harkat-ul-jehad al islam.

But the terror time chart then and yesterday did not have an afflicted Jupiter.

Infact yesterday Jupiter's 9^th aspect was there on the terror time lagna and the moon. From this I deduce that the real cause of the attack is somewhere local or personal – a retaliatory act of vengeance or may be linked to the underworld elements who were involved in J.Dey's murder. This can also be interpreted that someone is testing the preparedness of the people and the police and also the efficacy of themselves in perpetrating the crime. Because this particular position of Jupiter occurred as an exception on only occasion when settling scores was the cause (as stated above). So I think the local factors must also be thoroughly investigated.
