Day – 12 of Garbottam 2015-16 – a failure.

The 12th day of Garbottam of 2015-2016 began after 5.30 PM on 9th January 2016 and ended around 6 PM on 10th January 2016.

The 195th day effect in my place of observation will be on 20th July 2016.

The corresponding fortnight will be from 19th November to 2nd December 2016.

It was the most disappointing day. Absolutely no activity in the sky. It was a dry run for the whole of Pooradam and Utthradam that started after 11 AM this day (12th day – 10th January 2016).

The foremost Garbottam days mentioned by Varahamihira pertain to Moon in Pooradam, Utthradam and Swati. If it is cloudy on these days, with gentle air blowing and sun hiding behind the clouds very often, it is said a good “pregnancy” has happened. Such features on these days bring bountiful rains in the 195th days and in the corresponding fortnights for several days.

In the present period of Garbottam, Swati was over on day-6 of Garbottam. Pooradam was over in the 3rd quarter of day 12. Only Utthradam remains now. So far these days did not show symptoms of ‘pregnancy’. That means a dry NE monsoon season in my place of observation, that is, Chennai.
The night of day 12 was still and cloudless. The day break was too bright. Right from morning the sky continued to be cloudless on all directions. No breeze was felt.

But by 11 AM small bunches of clouds started appearing in South and West. And gentle wind was felt from east, south and south east and later from west.

This is in contrast to the other days. The direction of the wind or rainfall in the corresponding period will be opposite to the direction of wind felt during Garbottam days. For all days until the 12th day the direction of the wind was north or northeast. This means the direction of wind and rainfall during the corresponding period would be in Southwest. This tallies with the direction of the SW monsoon.

Till the 8th day of Garbottam, the wind was felt form North and Northeast. The 8th day coincides with Navarathri. But there after the winds were much less though cloud movement was noticed from north.

For the first time on the 12th day, coinciding with NE Monsoon, winds and clouds were moving from south and west.

For North east monsoon, the direction of the wind from 11th to 13th day of Garbottam must be from South, west and South west. Only in the last quarter of the 12th day, winds could be felt from south east, at times from South west and west. For most part of the day time of the 12th day, the wind was from South east. That means the wind direction in the corresponding period will be from North West which means winds from land area. Such winds can push away the clouds from east and south east that usually bring rainfall to Chennai and Tamilnadu.

The small bunches of clouds that were found only in the southern sky and western sky in contrast to complete absence of clouds in north and east was also a new phenomenon of this 12th day.  The few lone clouds seen in the Western sky after 11 AM is shown below. They were moving from South to North.

In the left hand corner transparent and vague cloud formation can be seen.

The southern sky looked like this around 11 AM

The Sun was a loner in the sky.

The northern sky remained featureless throughout the day. This happened for the first time in this Garbottam season.

The scarce cloud movement in the south and west lasted between 11 AM and 2 PM only. After that the clouds disintegrated. The western sky sported a long transparent cloud around 2 PM like this:

Does it look like the mouth of a frog or the beak of a stork? Can this be categorised as an aquatic feature of Garbottam?

Over all it was a disappointing day. The sun was hot and scorching throughout.

Even a few minutes before setting, it was bright and yellowish. Only at the time of setting (hiding behind the haze of the horizon), it turned red.

This was in contrast to 11th day’s sun set.

On the 11th day it looked like as follows:

Only when it was sinking, the sun looked red. The sky was purple and not exactly red.

Is NE Monsoon a failure as far as Chennai is concerned? We must wait till next November- December to know. Any way one more day is there. By 3 PM, wind had picked up and the 13th day began with pleasant winds from west and south west. Let us wait for the 13th (and last) day to unfold.

The observation of the 5 factors for day-12 are as follows:

(1) Wind:- Very less. By 3 PM gentle winds were felt. The direction was from South, east and later from West.
Result:-  Less than average feature of Garbottam

(2) Rain:- Nil.
Result:- Does not indicate rains in the said period.

(3) Lightening:- Nil.
Result:-  Does not indicate rains in the said period.

(4) Thunder:- Nil.
Result:- Does not indicate rains in the said period.

(5) Clouds:-  Very less clouds seen in south and western sky for about 3 hours at the start of last quarter of the day.  Otherwise, cloudless on all sides. No glow around the clouds.
Result:- Poor feature of Garbottam.

3-some features:-

(1) Terrestrial :- Behaviour of birds satisfactory.

 (2) Atmospheric :- Of the 12 features noted in my blog on Garbottam, nothing significant was noticed. (1) Gentle breeze for very less time. (2) Very few small bunches of clouds spotted for 3 hours only.

(3) Planetary:- (1) Stars appeared insignificant and pale. (2) Except Jupiter all the other planets were in Southern declinations. Planets in northern declinations are desirable. (3) Sun was reddish for a few minutes before sunset.

Interpretation:-

195th day impact:- Not much rains can be expected though there may be isolated drains in some pockets at the night of 20th July 2016.

The impact on the corresponding fortnight (19thNovember to 2nd December 2016) in my place of observation:- There may be isolated rains in Chennai in the 2nd half of the fortnight.

NE Monsoon:-  The planetary combinations for heavy rains start from 16th November 2016. This combination had Mars, Saturn and Sun in alternating signs. When moon moves in 5th, 7th and 9th signs from them and when such signs happen to be Cancer, Pisces, Taurus and Libra it had rained heavily in the past. It happened at the time of rains in Chennai from mid- November to first week of December 2015.

It happened 6 out of 9 times in Santa Cruz (Mumbai) between 1975 and 1990 resulting in more than 20 cm rainfall in 24 hours. Such a combination was present in 4 out 8 times in the same period when more than 20 cm rainfall was recorded in a single day in Colaba, Mumbai.

The corresponding fortnight starts with this combination and moon in cancer. Somewhere in the east coast of India, heavy rain must be lashing the shores. Chennai is not in the line of those rains. At the end of the 12th day, the Garbottam indicates this.

Day – 11 of Garbottam 2015-16 - yet to pick up.

The 11th day of Garbottam of 2015-2016 began after 5.30 PM on 8th January 2016 and ended after 5.30 PM on 9th January 2016.

The 195th day effect in my place of observation will be on 19th July 2016.

The corresponding fortnight will be from 6thNovember 2016 to 19th November 2016.

This 11th day is an important one as it is the day of Purvashada (Pooradam). Moon entered Purvashada around noon and is going to be there till noon on the 12th day (10th January 2016). Uttrashada (utthradam) that comes after this also is very important. In the month of Margazhi if the Garbottam signs are good when Moon is transiting Purvashada and Utthrashada, there will be abundant rains in the corresponding 195th day and it would even continue for several days after that. But it all depends on good Garbottam signs on the days Moon is crossing these stars.

By the time Moon entered Purvashada, Venus has crossed Saturn and was forward to Saturn. Moon entered into conjunction with Sun around 8 AM, a few hours before noon this day.
The change in the atmospherics was palpable from noon.

Tracing the Garbottam signs from the beginning of the 11th day, the night time of the 11th day was still but cool. The stars were faint spots of white. The day broke with brightness and less of reddishness at pre-dawn. This is a negative feature. The clouds were found shattered in the morning, but by 8 AM, a few bunches of clouds were seen swimming across here and there.

This cloud spotted at 8 AM could have formed into a duck but, it’s very presence elated me as this sighting came nearly after 20 hours. For the past 20 hours, I could not spot any bulky one with some shape resembling an aquatic animal even remotely.
Most clouds looked shattered like this only: (pic below)

Long streaks of clouds are good but the long streaks in this pic were in fact thin traces of clouds brushed away by wind. Not a healthy Garbottam.

The following was taken just before noon.

It shows that clouds were indeed forming but not in full strength.
By Noon I became curious and anxious too that I must capture some favourable features. The clouds were not showing up in bulk and with halo as it were on 8th and 9th days. The clouds seem to have been scorched, but there were clouds around the sun.

The Sun looked different at 3 different times. But none of them could match the Sun with glowing clouds seen on 8th and 9th day.

The Sun at 11 AM

Is there are garland of halo around the Sun? Look at the clouds. They were lacklustre. No glow on their borders.

The Sun at 1 PM

The Sun at 3 PM

Is there a huge halo around the Sun?
The sun with a glow and a halo is a good feature of Garbottam.

At sun set the sun turned red and presented a beautiful twilight.

The sky in the east opposite to the time of sunset looked as follows:

Less bunches of clouds, but a mal-formed duck or stork reflecting the western glow.
The day of Pooradam which must see active movement of crowded clouds was disappointing. But the sky was not totally empty. Some activity was there in the sky.

Relating this day to the 195th day which falls on 19th July, the fortnight following 19th July must see rains as per 3rd day Garbottam. This gives me hope that tomorrow, (12th day) with Utthradam would and must see good signs of Garbottam. And that is my last hope too. For, we are left with only one day after that. The observation so far has not shown a consistent and bountiful season of rains for my place of observation. The next 2 days are going to see good planetary combinations for rainfall. That must benefit my place of observation in the suburb of Chennai. That is my prayer too.

The observation of the 5 factors for day-11 are as follows:

(1) Wind:- Gentle breeze was felt often.  The direction was from north and east
Result:-  Good feature of Garbottam

(2) Rain:- Nil.
Result:- Does not indicate rains in the said period.

(3) Lightening:- Nil.
Result:-  Does not indicate rains in the said period.

(4) Thunder:- Nil.
Result:- Does not indicate rains in the said period.

(5) Clouds:-  Bulky or dense clouds were less and some were spotted after noon, that is, in the last quarter of the day. But horizon was filled with bluish clouds. Clouds around the sun were shattered or scorched. No glow around the clouds. Clouds looked thin and brushed away. Vague aquatic forms were spotted after noon.

A vague image of stork sighted at 3 PM.

Result:- A fight between mis-carriage and recovery. Garbottam features are average.

3-some features:-

(1) Terrestrial :- Behaviour of birds satisfactory.

 (2) Atmospheric :- Of the 12 features noted in my blog on Garbottam, (1) gentle breeze (2) Halo around the Sun (3) clouds near horizon looking blue in colour.

(3) Planetary:- (1) Planets and stars appeared pale. (2) Except Jupiter all the other planets were in Southern declinations. Planets in northern declinations are desirable. (3) Sun was red in colour at the time of sun set.

Interpretation:-

195th day impact:- Not much rains can be expected though it may rain mildly at night time.

The impact on the corresponding fortnight (6th November to 19th November) in my place of observation:- There may be isolated rains in Chennai in the 2nd half of the fortnight.

NE Monsoon:-  On 6th November 2016, Moon will be in Utthradam and aspects it own house, Cancer, a watery sign. Moon will be in its own Navamsa at that time. It joins Mars which is also in Utthradam at that time. Mars has by then moved to an alternate sign from Saturn. And Sun is going to join Saturn on 16th November. That is the beginning of the month of Karthigai. Until 11th December this combination is going to be there. The past records show that this combination gives bountiful rains. With Mars in the lead, cyclonic storms can be expected.

For rains in Chennai, the last 2 days of this year’s Garbottam must be good. That is, it must be good from the evening of 9th January to the evening of 11th January 2016.

Anyway NE Monsoon would be active elsewhere for the corresponding 2 fortnights.

Day – 10 of Garbottam 2015-16 – a case of mis-carriage!

The 10th day of Garbottam of 2015-2016 began after 5 PM on 7th January 2016 and ended after 5 PM on 8th January 2016.

The 195th day effect in my place of observation will be on 18th July 2016.

The corresponding fortnight will be from 23rdOctober to 6th November 2016.

The 10th day Garbottam comes with a Planetary war (Graha Yuddha) between Saturn and Venus. It started in the last quarter of the 10th day, that is, around noon of 8th January, 2016. It is going to last for the whole day of 11th day Garbottam.

These 2 days are crucial for Chennai and Tamilnadu as NE Monsoon must have been active at that time to bring rains to Tamilnadu.

But the astrological rule is that if there is a planetary war or an eclipse on any day of Garbottam, there will be “mis-carriage of pregnancy of clouds” and the corresponding fortnight will not get rains.

The corresponding fortnight (23rd October to 6th November) has Budha – Shukra Sameepyam that facilitates good rainfall. A good Garbottam on this 10th day would ensure good rainfall of that fortnight which is going to see Budha – Shukra Sameepyam.

But the Garbottam on this 10th day is disappointing. There is an additional deterrent in the form of planetary war.

The 10th day started with a red sun at the time of setting and bluish tinted fish like clouds floating above the sun and opposite to the sun. As night progressed, the sky became clear and stars were visible as pale discs. So far it is good.

But the morning sun rise was not accompanied with streaks of cloud as was in the previous day. But they did not form aquatic shapes or any recognisable shapes.

By 10 AM on 8th January 2016.

As the day progressed, clouds did not form in bulk but looked shattered by winds at their height. At the surface level, the wind was still but whenever it blew it was gentle. But the appearance of the clouds showed that they were blown away by some wind currents at their height. This was not so on other days.

This is how the clouds looked as day progressed.

At 1 PM

No aquatic forms were seen and for most part, the clouds could be seen shattered by upper level wind circulation.

The clouds did not glow with a halo that was noticed on the last 2 days. One important feature of Garbottam is that dense clouds must shine with a halo around them by reflecting the sun light.
Such clouds were seen on the 9th day (shown below):

This is a good Garbottam feature.

The dark clouds rushing to hide the Sun without losing their bulk was noticed on the 8th day which is shown below:

This is also a good Garbottam feature.

In those days this happened after noon, that is, in the last quarter of the day.
Compare them with the 10th day’s clouds.

Sun with clouds at 1 PM.

A  little later this is how the clouds looked:

The clouds on this day (10th day) gave an appearance of having been blown away. This started from 10 AM when clouds were building up but distortions increased after noon. The time coincides with the start of the planetary war between Saturn and Venus. This feature is something which we will be checking in the corresponding fortnight.
.

Clouds at 3 PM – looking more vague

The observation of the 5 factors for day-10 are as follows:

(1) Wind:- Very less. Gentle breeze was felt at night very rarely. During the day the mild wind was hot and rare.
Result:-  Poor feature of Garbottam

(2) Rain:- Nil.
Result:- Does not indicate rains in the said period.

(3) Lightening:- Nil.
Result:-  Does not indicate rains in the said period.

(4) Thunder:- Nil.
Result:- Does not indicate rains in the said period.

(5) Clouds:-  Clouds were moving from North and North east, but they could not form as bulky ones. No aquatic forms could be noticed.
Result:- Though the direction is good, the shattering away of clouds indicates ‘mis-carriage’ of Garbottam.

3-some features:-

(1) Terrestrial :- Behaviour of birds satisfactory,  but their movement is less, perhaps due to hotness.

(2) Atmospheric :- Of the 12 features noted in my blog on Garbottam, most of them were missing. Though there were clouds, they were not exactly dense or bulky nor they could form any shape, leave alone aquatic shape. They seem to be constantly dissipated as they form and cling together. However around the horizon, bluish tinted clouds were fused with the sky.

(3) Planetary:- (1) Planets and stars appeared pale. (2) Except Jupiter all the other planets were in Southern declinations. Planets in northern declinations are desirable. (3) Sun was red in colour at the time of sun set.

The red sun was the only redeeming feature.

Distorted clouds continued to exist after sun set on 8th January, showing that the "Miscarriage" of the fetes of clouds continued at the beginning of the 11th day.

Interpretation:-

195th day impact:-  Rainfall in the fortnight when the 195th day falls (18th July, 2016), will come to an end by the end of 18th July, because the 2nd part of the 10th day of Garbottam did not have Garbottam features.  (The fortnight between 5th July and 19th July will be wet as per the indications of 2nd day of Garbottam).

The impact in the corresponding fortnight (23rd October to 6th November 2016) in my place of observation:- It will start with rains or hopes of rains. The first few days will have rains but the rain clouds will be dissipated or shattered or driven to some other location away from my place of observation. The planetary war and weak Garbottam features for the second half of this fortnight discourage rainfall in my place of observation.

NE Monsoon:- NE Monsoon features in the Bay would be seen in the 2nd half of October. But they would not give the normal rainfall of this season. Though strong rainfall yoga exists at that time by way of Budha- Shukra Sameepyam, Venus is also moving closer to Saturn at that time while Mars will be ahead of a line up of planets.  This shows some violent formations but that could not give rains. Perhaps such formations would give rains to those places where good Garbottam features existed on this day (10th day).

It remains to be seen how the clouds on the day time of the 11th day are going to look like. But it is truly amazing that a planetary war coincided with weak Garbottam that saw clouds shattered true to the nature of “mis-carriage” of the fetes of the clouds.
