In the heart of Alagiri’s land known for ‘cash for vote’, one Mr John has been ‘bold enough’ to defy the Formula of Alagiri. This man has displayed a message in front of his house that his vote is not sale.
Seeing him display this, others also are encouraged to put up similar bills on front of their houses. The two famous looters of the country, namely the DMK and the Congress are in the electoral fray on their ‘collective strength’ of parting off some of their ill-gotten money to purchase votes. This strategy known as “Thirumangalam Formula” is to make sure that some money is stuffed in each house and send an enquiry -like -warning on what they must do in return for the cash. The voters know that they should not do what they were ‘told’ to do. But if they don’t do what is expected of them, they know that there is no guarantee to their life and property.
The Maduraikars still remember the fear factor attached to the cash for votes. But this time they need not fear as this is not a bye election where the ruling party would be in the background, capable of doing any harm to them in the event of not voting for them. The people can vote fearlessly this time. The people must be told that they need not fear about a backlash from the DMK, if they refused to vote for the cash they give. This election gives them an opportunity to take a sweet revenge on the DMK for the rule by fear that they unlashed.
The most prone areas of this fear factor are in the South starting with Madurai . Like Mr John, others also must boldly display a similar board in front of their houses. Volunteers of forums such as the one by Vijay’s fan clubs can take up the task of even distributing printed papers bearing this slogan that the votes can not be sold, to all the people in the South. This would increase the awareness of the voters and also drive a message that the DMK thugs can not easily approach the voters with their offers.
The voters also must be assured that the DMK can not do any harm to them if they refuse to take money or take money and vote as per their wish. The election commission is already doing a propaganda of this, but the more effective way to make people vote as per their wish or refuse the cash or ignore the lure of cash would be to reach each and every household in vulnerable areas with a bill on “no vote for cash” to be displayed at their door steps.
