Karunanidhi, why he was the way he was – a karmic analysis!

I know someday I will write this article, and the day had come now. The way a legend got ended on 7th August 2018 was the last hint I wanted to wait for, to understand one of the finest ways Karma works on human life. The legend I refer to here is Kalaignar Karunanidhi. His end gives a perfect justification for the way he lived his life and for whatever he was known for, both positive and negative which I am not elaborating here. I would rather delve on why he came to hold on to those positives and negatives from the karmic hints found in his horoscope.

His horoscope is absolutely fantastic, something we don’t come across in one’s life time. Not even Gandhi who got us Independence and is honoured as the Father of our nation could come anywhere near Karunanidhi as far as his horoscope is concerned. Of all the known horoscopes, some features of none other than Bhagwan Sri Rama are comparable with Karunanidhi’s horoscope! This would sound horrific (hope not blasphemous) given the fact that Karunanidhi stood against Rama and was an embodiment of everything that was not of Rama, but he did have some planetary positions as in Rama’s horoscope.

Both Rama and Karunanidhi were born in Kataka lagna. Both had Mars as the Yoga karaka that was exalted in the 7th house (Capricorn). Both had the 7th lord Saturn (also the 8th lord) posited in the 4th house (Kendra) and in exaltation. Rama had 7 planets in exaltation or in own house whereas Karunanidhi had only three planets in exaltation. But a minimum of three planets in exaltation is sufficient to confer Rajayoga! Karunanidhi lived like a powerful monarch. Beyond this everything of Karunanidhi is totally different from Rama.

The same combinations related to the 7th house (spouse) made Rama an Eka Patni person. In contrast Karunanidhi had three wives. For Rama the lord of the house where the 7th lord (Saturn) was posited was Venus that got exalted in the 9th house. This gives rise to Kaakala yoga that ensures fidelity and complete loyalty to the spouse. For Karunanidhi the same planet Venus has gone into the 12th house (malefic) which also happens to be a common sign indicating more than one wife and also scandalous relationship.

It is in the sub-sub period of Venus in the main period of the same planet Venus, Karunanidhi left this world. It is from this planet we are able to go back in time to even his previous birth to know why Karunanidhi was – after all a Karunanidhi!

In the horoscope of Karunanidhi displayed above Mars, Saturn and Moon are exalted. Lagna lord Moon is exalted and is in the star of Mars, the Yoga karaka. The 2nd lord Sun posited in the star of exalted Moon joins it. This combination just falls short of an important yoga called Sreekanta Yoga, related to Shiva!

If the lagna lord, the Sun and the Moon are exalted or in their own houses in trines or angles with each other, the person will be a staunch devotee of Shiva, always seen with Rudraksha mala doing japa. He would renounce material life and become an ascetic. At the end of this birth he would reach Shiva loka and won’t be reborn.

Such a person (according to Brahmarishi Vaakya) would have had a past karma of having served Shiva bhaktas well and worshipped ONLY Shiva with all devotion.

Similar combination was read by this writer in a Naadi verse that when the Moon and the Sun happen to be yoga karakas (4th and 5th lords for Aries Lagna or 9th and 10th lords for Scorpio lagna) and join at a tine in a friendly house from Mars conjoined with Ketu, the person will be by nature a Gnani and a Shiva Bhakta. He would enjoy all round prosperity and honours from the ruler. He would be engaged in Dharmic actions.

Karunanidhi had the above combinations almost close to the rule. The Sun and the moon are strong and beneficially placed in a trine to exalted Mars. The location in the 11th house is little less than perfect. The 11th is 2nd to the 10th house of Karma and as such it must signify the outcome of past karma. But his life as Karunanidhi didn’t show any semblance of to the above yogas. Why?

Looking for causes, this combination of Sun and Moon is aspected by Jupiter (retrograde), the lord of 6th and 9th house. The 9th house signifies the religious nature of a person. If the lord of this house happens to be Jupiter and afflicted, it denotes an offence to the Guru (teacher) in the past birth. The sun-Moon combination showing him as a great devotee of Shiva in the last birth had been afflicted by the wrath of a Guru.

Tracing the nature of wrath, one can see a perfect connection between Jupiter, Mercury and Venus in his horoscope. Jupiter is in the star of Mercury, the 12th lord which is located in the 10th house (jeevanasthan). The main significance of Mercury is books and the expertise to write. Mercury is in the star of Venus which is located in the house of Mercury (12th house). Venus is the Baadhaka for his horoscope and is posited in the star of Jupiter!

The Baadhaka nature of Venus is outwardly manifested in his life as polygamy. It also resulted in injury to his left eye (12th house signifies left eye) that happened in 1953 due to an accident. That was in Jupiter dasa- Mercury Bhukti. It was from then onwards he started wearing dark glasses. The timing and the injury shows harm done to the eye of a cow or a calf in the previous birth.

Looking at hints on past karma, the stronger of the two, the sun and the moon is to be taken. The Sun is stronger in his horoscope in Shadbala and also with reference to its dispositor, the exalted Moon. It is located in the house of Mercury in the Drekkana chart, once again showing some connection to Mercury significance.

On further probing we find Mercury joining the 8th lord Saturn in the 10th Navamsa in opposition to Baadhaka Venus and conjoined with the Nodes! This coupling happening in Navamsa completes the picture with Jupiter also going into debility in the 12th Navamsa. Some offence done to the Teacher with reference a sacred and highly valued book by a high level devotee of Shiva, almost at the verge of attaining Liberation in his next birth had invited a retributive karma of losing sight of the value of teacher, of Dharma and sacred books and devotion to God in his next birth.

In all probability, he would have defiled or wantonly misused or destroyed a precious book of Knowledge of Dharma of his teacher. He must have been a Brahmin then, for, only if a Brahmin engaged in the highest task of preserving the book and knowledge of Dharma had transgressed from that task, the punishment would have been the highest –in consonance with Manu dharma! In that situation, he would have been expelled from whatever high position he was holding and even ostracized from his own Brahmin community as a punishment.

{One must recall the DNA studies that show Brahmins and others having the same genetic origins. A Brahmin fallen from the discipline expected of him was a degraded one and had to engage in activities other than Vedic work. There is a Sangam verse saying that the Brahmins who had given up Vedic homas would engage themselves in shell cutting work (Agananuru 24). As a corollary we can associate the Indus site at Gola Dhoro engaged in shell cutting and gem works with the descendants of Aswatthama known for sporting a precious and rare gem on his head. When driven to forest at the end of the Mahabharata war, the Brahmin community of Aswatthama could have taken up shell and gem cutting as the next option to Vedic life.}

Coming to the past life analysis of Karunanidhi, the fall from the grace of his teacher and the banishment from his own Brahmin community could manifest into the next birth as hatred against Gurus, Mutts, sacred texts and importantly the Brahmin community itself. And Manu had become the most hated word for him.

Kāla Purusha had made use of this Prarabdha karma of him to perpetuate Kali in the current times. Just by one man, Kala Purusha had altered the minds and lives of scores of people for nearly half a century. Karunanidhi had become the tool in the hands of Kāla Purusha!

The level of retribution was such that the great Shiva Bhakta had to lose whatever spiritual gains he made in that birth, but the Punya arising out of it had conferred only material benefits to him. The Mercury connect of reading and writing ability was there throughout  with him working as a tool in his hand to do whatever he was destined to do. One may recall in this context the Thirukkural on how the education one has had in a birth comes to stick to him for 7 births (Kuraḷ: 398)

Starting from the beginning of his life, we can see a correlation at every stage to the kind of Pararabdha karma we explained above. He was born in a famous Kshetra of Shiva (Thirukkuvalai) and his electoral debut was from another famous Shivite location (Kulithalai) but they could not have any impact on him due to the wrath of the Teacher.

A Shiva Bhakt would move away from lures woman and associated attractions, but Karunanidhi was attracted to them and earned a living from his writing skills in those areas.

Parasakthi was the first film that earned him a name and fame as a lyricist, but what did he write in that film? It was abject denigration of Hindu culture, criticism of Hindu beliefs and idol worship. He even went to the extent of portraying a temple priest (Brahmin) attempting to rape a woman within the temple – something outrageous and difficult to even imagine at that time (1952). But he did get away with all that in the name of freedom of speech accorded by none other than famous Brahmin of those times, Rajaji!!

Even to conceive such ideas and convert them into lyrics, one must have had Prarabdha karma of the kind written above.

His obsession with Brahmins and their sacred thread was abnormal to the core. Only if he had been hurt by the banishment from the community in the past life for the offense he did, he could not be expected to have behaved like this.

He even once said, (read here)

What to do, this chief minister does not wear the sacred thread.
And he was not born in the caste represented by God’s face.
He was born in the caste identified with his feet.”

The provocation for this outburst was an editorial in Ananda Vikatan that was critical of the phone tapping episode by his government. See his reaction, when a misdemeanour is questioned, his response seems to be like his atman was lamenting over a complaint about him that cost him his stature and caste in a past birth.

His atman seemed to be yearning for a place among Brahmins or else why he chose to buy a house from a Brahmin that was close to a temple in a Brahmin agrahara in Gopalapuram?

If not for an anger against the Brahmins for expelling him from their community in the past birth why should he keep abusing them at every possible opportunity to the extent that he declared that Brahmins must shiver at the thought of them (his party). Similar is his outburst that a Hindu means Thief! No person in saner senses will speak like this.

It was absolutely difficult for him not to abuse Hinduism at every possible instance. Even on the occasion of the Moon Impact Probe (IMP) of Chandrayaan I landing on the Moon, Karunanidhi could not avoid abusing the Hindu beliefs while praising the probe in a poem. As a sample case of his ‘literary prowess’, that poem is reproduced below. One can see the mistakes in language, allusion to some lewd expression and abuse of Hinduism – the three common features one can find in most of his works.

The title has sandhi-mistake. It must be Nilā-p- PennE, not ‘Nilā Penne’ (meaning, ‘Moon, the girl’). He starts the poem by saying that probe was like planting a kiss on the honey lips of the moon. He goes on to say that the probe had shattered the Puranic version of Moon as the new lover of Brihaspati’s wife, Tara and the Panchanga version of eclipse as Rahu and Ketu swallowing the Moon, as lies and imagination.

One can imagine the level of tolerance the people of Tamilnadu must have had to be treated with this kind of literature by him.

The Mercury effect is in his horoscope is a degraded one. He retained the ability to write but to write in abhorrent ways. None of his works will stand scrutiny by impartial educated ones. None of his write-ups also would stand the test of time.

The cause for his banishment could have been genuine but since the root cause was a great offence to Hindu Dharma, the retributive karma was such that he was impelled by it to make and speak things that he would shudder to do in normal mind. The entire life of Karunanidhi was as though it was under the grip of the retributive karma, done without any freewill or application of his own mind. This reminds me of the Gita vachan, that man does karma absolutely not through his control but under the control of the 3-some Prakruti Gunas. (Bhagavad Gita: 3-5)

He eulogised Thiruvalluvar but never stood by what Thiruvalluvar wrote. His obsession with Thiruvalluvar was as though he treated him as his Teacher – in a bid to appease the teacher of his past birth but lo, what did he do for his memory?

Karunanidhi constructed Valluvar Kottam in the deepest part of the “Long Tank” that covered most of Chennai, by closing that water body. An environmental aggression!

He erected a statue for Thiruvalluvar at Kanyakumari in a style that was not as per tradition. A statue of Thiruvalluvar was already found out in Mylapore showing him in seated posture with Gyan mudra as a teacher. (Below)

Thiruvalluvar was seen wearing the sacred thread in that statue.  But Karunanidhi in the grip of Fate could not accept such features. He erected a stature sans sacred thread and Hindu symbols on the forehead.

The gesture is Buddhi mudra that is done to understand the Thought emanating from one’s inner self. Thinking of the past birth, it appears Karunanidhi unconsciously chose this mudra in his inner urge to know what he is up to.

Karunanidhi’s obsession with Thiruvalluvar is phenomenal. He identified a year as the birth year of Thiruvalluvar and even introduced a calendar in Thiruvalluvar’s name which Thriuvalluvar himself would not have approved. He even changed the New Year to Thai close to Thiruvalluvar’s birth date he proposed. All that he did was anti-intellectual and unscientific. But thinking from karmic angle, it appears that he had the inner urge to make amends with his teacher of the past birth through Thiruvalluvar, but it turned out that everything of it was objectionable. Strangely he had many takers for his innovations and hate- mongering speeches, may be because there are many with daunting Prarabdha, peopling this Yuga of Kali.

The wrath of the Teacher was such that Karunanidhi held on to those as his teachers who could never be accepted by a person in the right sense of mind. He even installed a statue for one such teacher of this birth in front of Srirangam temple. Interestingly his wrath was directed against Vishnu deities and not Shiva! An intense devotion to Shiva in the past birth involuntarily made him keep away from offending Shiva?

The height of hatred for Hindu deities can be seen in his infamous posturing against none other than Sri Rama! He sounded like a Hiranya Kasipu when he questioned in which engineering college Rama studied. The fact is that he could get away with all the nonsense he spoke. That shows the powerful background karma of enormous proportions behind him. Only a great soul with a strong awakening in the past could wield a dominating negative influence like this in the event of an offense dampening that awakening. The offense had just turned off his sense of right.

Watching his life right from my childhood, the first hint of him coming out of the mess of Prarabdha was noticed by me in his reaction to the speech on Tamil Chandas of Alvars by Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swamy on a stage shared by them. The expression betrayed by Karunanidhi on that occasion on the stage was that it was as though he was hearing the beautiful verses of Tamil by Alvars for the first time. The verses did seem to have entered his ears which until then were seemed to be filled with lead!

The next improvement was in penning the history of Ramanuja which happened to be the last work in his life as Karunanidhi. It appeared that the power of Mercury whose lord was Vishnu as per astrology gradually gravitated him towards Vishnu. Ramanuja as the tallest Guru for centuries seemed to have signalled a kind of home-coming for the tormented atman of Karunanidhi.
Did the intensity of the offense of the past birth come down?

I was tempted to think so when his health deteriorated on the day of Guru Purnima! There was an eclipse on that night and all eligible Tamil Brahmins were to wake up to do tarpan at 3 am when the eclipse was to wean out.

When this writer also woke up to render assistance in the tarpan, news was flashed on TV and Twitter that Karunanidhi passed away. It was electrifying to read that news as in few minutes all the eligible Tambrahms were going to offer tarpan on the most auspicious time of eclipse of Guru Purnima in which the last mantra is going to enable them offer water to all the atman that have left this world who don’t happen to be their own ancestors.

That means soon after leaving the body, Karunanidhi is going to take the first waters from the tarpan of that Guru Purnima eclipse from the Brahmins whom he pounded very badly while alive. I thought, does this signal the end of the wrath of his Guru? Has he now come out of the Prarabdha, that his Guru had been kind enough to allow him take the first water from the Brahmins on that day auspicious to Teachers?

But no, soon the news changed that he is alive. When I went through the time in his horoscope, I realised his end had come. The period was Venus – Jupiter- Venus- Mars- Ketu.

Ketu, the occupant of the 8th house in natal chart was also the sub cuspal lord of 6th, 8th and 12th houses. It joined lagna lord moon and maraka Mars in the 7th from natal lagna on that day. Rahu, the maraka as occupant of 2nd house in natal chart was in lagna with sun and Mercury. Venus, the Baadhaka and also the 22nd Drekkana lord was in the maraka house of the natal chart. That moment when Guru Purnima was eclipsed to the maximum was the apt moment for the phenomenal figure like Karunanidhi who offended his Guru in the past to have left the mortal coils.

But his Prarabdha didn’t seem to end. He was put on life support that merely could have held his breath and the atman was just clinging precariously to the body. The moment they take out the life support, his atman could have got the release. This can be proved astrologically.

It is possible to find out the duration of the unconscious state or the state of transit from the body before death. This is deduced from the remaining degrees in the lagna at the birth chart. The remaining period of the lagna in the sign must be doubled if the lagna lord aspects the lagna and trebled if a benefic aspects the lagna. In Karunanidhi’s horoscope the lagna is aspected by Jupiter!!

The remaining degrees at birth were less than 4. Converted into time (1 degree = 4 minutes, for 4 degrees it is 16 minutes), the remaining 16 minutes in the sign trebled by Jupiter’s aspect gives 48 minutes of transit time for the Atman. It is within this time his system must have been connected to life support machines. So he was breathing while his Atman was wandering into higher realms with Awareness sinking in. The long duration of clinically aided life that we saw for more than 10 days looks improbable from this astrological point of view.

Ten days passed and it seemed the ‘political business’ he started was needed to be strengthened by his descendants. That is the legacy he left behind. All these 10 days his Atman must have been in touch with those at the ethereal level and experienced  several times the re-run of his life and why he behaved the way he did in relation to the Prarabdha  karma.

By the time the heirs decided to take out the life support, his atman could have gained its composure. His party men are thinking that they had succeeded in getting him buried next to his mentor. But his mentor is high above the worldly plane. For normal beings, the atman is said to be hanging around the worldly plane of previous existence. But an extraordinary atman that Karunanidhi is, he must have left for other realms with thoughts on what a damage he had done to the world and how he is going to rectify them all.

It was on an Ekadasi day his atman left completely the mortal connection – the day that one plays the game of Parama padam, popularly known as ladder and snake. There are ladders and snakes at many places in the grid of 100 squares. It is like the video game of ancient times. When one has more punya one reaches the ladder and climbs past several squares. But when one does a pāpa karma, one reaches the mouth of the snake and gets pulled down.

By his exalted devotion to Shiva and discipline, Karunanidhi was almost in the top layer of the grid with only a few squares to cross. But alas, the offense done to Guru threw him into the mouth of a long snake that pushed him down to the lower level. The higher that one is, even a smallest crime will give the gravest retribution. This is enshrined in Manu Neeti. To hate Manu for this is foolish which only those in lowest intellect would do. Being pushed down from his highest pedestal, Karunanidhi’s Atman must have been coming to terms with the reality on that Ekadasi day.

To start the new chapter in his next birth, he has laid the foundation in Ramanuja. He will have to start afresh, but hopefully in a Dharmic way. His association with Ramanuja gives me that hope. Noticeably he fell silent after scripting the Ramanuja serial. It looked as though this newly acquired teacher of his had shut his mouth so that no new karma is made. With the Prarabdha of the past having got worked out, Karunanidhi is going to start a very new life of Dharma, as a worshiper of Hinduism to the extent of protecting it from poaching religions which he allowed as Karunanidhi.

He might even be instrumental in constructing Ram Setu in that future birth. He might even completely put a stop to the absurd Dravidian talk. Powerful one that he is, he will rectify all the wrongs and mis-guidance he had done for over half a century.

In the final analysis, Kāla Purusha as usual emerged a victor in quickening Kali through Karunanidhi. Karunanidhi hailed as a victor in earthly life miserably lost to Kala Purusha and has to start from the beginning. But Karma is never fatalistic; it is a means by which one overcomes it. Karunanidhi’s odd kind of life shows that.

Grieve not Mr Karunanidhi, you are not a Shudra!

Not a day passes without our Chief minister entertaining us with his pearls of wisdom.

The most recent one is that the people are deliberately spreading falsehood
to black-out the “excellent achievements” scored everyday by his government.
Why do people spread falsehood?
Here is his explanation for this..

“What to do, this chief minister does not wear the sacred thread.
And he was not born in the caste represented by God’s face.
He was born in the caste identified with his feet.”

What a finding!!
The provocation for this finding is an editorial in Ananda Vikatan
which was critical of the handling of the phone-tapping episode by the government.
Strangely Deccan Chronicle which initially reported the scam
was spared by him which he must have targeted vociferously,
probably because its editor happens to be a Muslim.

But what intrigues observers like me
is why no one questioned the propriety of a Chief secretary of a state
giving guidelines on how to proceed in a case against the former chief minister.
In what way was it connected with his job?
Was this not more serious than phone-tapping itself?
But none seemed to think in these lines.

Coming to the issue on shudra, which I thought I have something to say,
this is not the first time he has raked up an accusation like this on Brahmin vs Shudra.
He has done it in the past too.
If we know the way he acts and reacts,
we can easily predict when he will take up this accusation.

If the opponent happens to be his arch rival, Jayalalitha,
his reaction will be
“you too did it when you were the Chief minister. Why then accuse me now?”

If it is his alliance rival, say Ramdoss (father of Anbumani Ramdoss of AIIMS (in)fame),
his reply will be
“you can probe it in 2011 when you say you will come to power”

If it is common man
he will not bother to reply.

If that common man happens to be a Brahmin by caste,
his reply will be how he has given in the present scenario!
“I am a shudra. I don’t wear the sacred thread. That is why you say like this”

That is all. Matter over. Everyone will keep quiet.
The ultimate blame has now fallen on the poor (really poor many of them are) Brahmin
who is not clever like him in talking!

Karunanidhi is clever – definitely clever in replies like this.
He can even be called as a tri-kaala gyani,
one who knows
all the three states of time - the past, present and future!!

Look at his replies.
He connects to the past in his reply to Jayalalitha,
to the future in his reply to Ramdoss
and to the present in denouncing anything or anyone of Brahmin.
Can such person be shudra??

If by shudra, he means to say that he is not intelligent enough as a Brahmin,
he is proved wrong.
Because for any issue he has not less than three clever answers
which will put his detractors in a spot.
He IS clever,
so he can not be a shudra!!

If by shudra, he means a lowly caste, then he need not worry,
for caste has not put him in any disadvantage whatsoever.
On the contrary
he is the best example to show that status
is not connected to caste
and that one can rise to become the ruler of the land
irrespective of the caste he belongs to.

If by shudra he means the weak and the meek,
then he is not a shudra.
Recalling the words of Bheeshma
when Draupadi wanted him to spell his view on
how she could be dragged into the court after the dice game,
“the words of strong men will be the law”.

It is not caste nor intelligence
but brute power of might
that is the rule of the land.
Karunanidhi too knows this.
But because that power is challenged he gets irked
and lashes these accusations
depending on kala, desa, varthamana and persons who are involved.

His brute power does not spare even gods.
It is by this brute power he changed the calendar year for Tamils.
It is by this brute power he stopped the New year festivities in temple.
Such a person can not be a shudra!

Even by his own words comparing himself with those supposedly born of God’s feet,
he is not a shudra!
For one who does not even believe in the existence of GOD,
where is the chance to consider himself as being born of God’s feet?
So he can not be a shudra!

Why lament that he does not have sacred thread?
There is no bar on anyone to wear the sacred thread,
provided they are willing to learn Hindu thoughts.

Karunanidhi is already doing Yoga and is worshipping Suryanarayana.
It is just a formality for him to wear the sacred thread.
If he is ready,
many will be ready to initiate him with a sacred thread.
Such a person who is qualified to wear the sacred thread
says that he is shudra.
He is not a shudra!

Yet he is often found talking like this.
There can be only one reason for this.
It is about the true meaning of Shudra
or the meaning in which this name was coined and used.

Etymologically, the word shudra means ‘one who grieves’.
The grief is because of not knowing the Truth.
The opposite of shudra is not Brahmin.
It is vipra.
Vipra is one who is ecstatic,
The vipra knows and enjoys God,
whereas the shudra is one who grieves
because he does not know or enjoy god.

Anyone who grieves on account of this is a shudra.
Narada was one at one time.
Narada once told sage Sanatkumara
that he was in a state of grief.
Though he had known all Vedas, Ithihasas and puranas,
he could not understand the Truth of Brahman. (Chandogya VII.i.2-3)

Sanatkumara taught him Bhumavidya (Bhuman = Brahman)
That made him gain knowledge of the Brahman
thereby shedding shudra-hood.

Similarly the mighty king, who was the greatgrand son of  Jaanashruthi was a shudra for sometime.
(chandogya chapter IV)
He was known for his good works as a king -
like how our Chief minister, Karunanidhi is.
He was very proud of his works like our Chief minister.

But two sages did not accept this.
They approached him in the guise of swans.
While one of them was praising him,
the other spoke contemptuously of him
that he did not possess the knowledge of the Brahman.
On hearing this the king was grief-stricken,
but did not react like our Karunanidhi
that he was after all a kshathriya, not a Brahmin.
He listened to them and wanted to know what he must do.

They advised him to approach a sage, Raikva for help.
This sage addressed the king as shudra twice in his dialogue
It was because the king was grief-smitten.
The king wiped off his grief after receiving the knowledge of Truth of Brahman.

Anyone who is grieving is a shudra.
Once the grief is gone, the shudra-hood also is gone.

This is how the term shudra was defined.
But why should Karunanidhi crop up this talk time and again?
I have an answer to this which I share here.

He is more like an Ati-vadin, than like a shudra.
The power of arguments of the Chief-minister is
comparable to Ati-vadin in Vedantic parlance.

His power of arguments or vaadam is supreme.
He will argue in such a way to make people believe that he is more right.
But he is a shred below the ati-vadin in the application of this term.

The ati-vadin is one who makes a statement surpassing previous statements
and the statements of others,
in establishing that his statement is far truer than others’ statements.
But this statement will be about Atma vidya or the object of worship.

But Karunanidhi’s statements as Ati-vadin are not about Atma vidya.
That is why he is naturally grief-stricken.

In this sense
and in the truer sense of the term,
Karunanidhi IS a shudra.

He need not worry about not wearing the sacred thread.
If he wants to wear the sacred thread,
he must first give up material quests,
know and accept that good deeds give good results
and bad deeds give bad results and
accept that God is the Ultimate Reality
controlling this system of good and bad
and that as a ruler he has to treat all the citizens equal
(not as backward or forward).

I don’t say this from any so-called Arya vedam.
The sage Raikva I recommend to him are
Tholkappiyam PoruLiyal sutra 53
and PuranaanUru 29.

His long innings in public life which has revealed him threadbare
to observers like me steeped in sanatana ways,
the assessment is that
he is neither a shudra (absolutely no grief),
nor a Brahmin ( he can not give up material quest)
but a kshathriya kula Vaisya
or Vaisya kula kshathriya –
pride and prejudice splendidly mixed with
trade and treasures.

The dalit politics of Karunanidhi.

Given below is a detailed analysis by the senior journalist, Mr BR Haran on the kind of 'dalit' politics practiced by Mr M. Karunanidhi. He has exposed the double face of Karunanidhi who has no qualms in wearing the cunning mask in the name of dalit card whenever it is convenient for him. Before going into the article I wish to give the explanation for who is a dalit or what makes one a dalit – something revealed in Chandhogya Upanishad.

Karunanidhi says that A.Raja is being targeted because he is a dalit.

But any Raja can be targeted if he behaves in a particular fashion which is what makes one a dalit.

Dalit is a new term to Tamil. I heard that it is a Marathi word for Shudra.)

There comes a narration in Chandhogya Upanishad (4-2-1 to 5) where a righteous king of noble deeds, who was the great-grand-son of another popular king by name Jaanasruthi was called by a sage as Shudra!

The sage was Raikva, who was known for exemplary knowledge.  Jaanasruthi's great grandson wanted to learn from him and therefore approached him with a number of gifts that included cattle, horses, gold etc. The sage refused to accept them and calling him a shudra, asked him leave that place.

Undaunted by the rejection, the king went again to the sage with even more gifts which included a village and his unmarried daughter too! The king requested the sage to accept his daughter in marriage along with the gifts and in return teach him the highest knowledge.

At this offer, the sage said that he was accepting the gifts on account of his daughter. But he did not hesitate to call him as shudra again when he said this.

This story in the hands of the likes of Karunanidhi would be used to degrade the sage for calling the king as shudra but yet accepting the girl as an act of weakness for woman.

No.

There are two important principles present in this narration.

First about why he called the king a shudra and the second why he accepted the girl as his bride.

If a person thinks and acts in such a way that he can use money or materials to gain something or anything, then such a person is known as Shudra.  In the much misunderstood Manu smrithi and the Mahabharata narration on varnas (Shanti parva – section LX), it is said that shudras must not be given money. What was originally told was that if given money, he who misuses money for dubious gains becomes a shudra. Due that reason, he was denied money.

In the above narration from Chandhogya Upanishad the king thought that he could get knowledge by offering materials. That was the reason the sage called him a "Shudra" and sent him back.

But again the king came back with an additional gift in the form of his daughter.

This also qualified him as a shudra which the sage did not hide to tell.

But what made the sage accept the gifts and teach him was not the attraction to the girl. It is held that when a girl is offered in marriage, the suitor is not supposed to reject that offer. If he rejects then it amounts to humiliating her. The cost of such a rejection in terms of humiliation, psychological suffering and not getting any other suitor to marry her is given weightage.

To understand this we have to recall the incident involving Bheeshma and Amba who was one of the three girls abducted by Bheeshma to get married to his step brother. But as events unfolded, she asked Bheeshma to marry her. But Bheeshma refused. That proved to be his nemesis! Rejecting a girl who is offered in marriage comes with a volley of karmic burdens. The sage Raikva did not want to invite such burdens.

So he accepted the girl for marriage and therefore had to accept whatever she brought along with her. In return, he taught the king what he wanted to know.

The sage called the king a shudra for using gifts or materials to get something which he must have sought with humility and service.

This concept of what makes one a shudra degenerated in course of time.

Whatever be one's status in society, the actions only make him what he is worth for.

So anyone who uses and misuses money and materials for dubious gains is a shudra.

Raja is a shudra by action for what he got in the allotment of Spectrum.

Karunanidhi is a shudra by action for all that he has amassed over the decades.

Had his hands been clean, he would have been like Kakkan, whose life and actions were not that of a Shudra!

CORRUPTION AND DALIT POLITICS
By

BR Haran from Chennai

"Is there one justice for Sudras, and another one for Brahmins, who develop their belly without performing any work? In Tamil Nadu, there is no rebirth for 'Manu Dharma' which advocates one justice for self and another one for Sudras". These were the golden words uttered by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi in defence of spectrum killer Raja, in the aftermath of CAG reports, which confirmed the killing.

On November 14, after the resignation of Raja, Karunanidhi, exhibiting his 'passion' for Democracy said, "We have asked Raja to resign only to allow the functioning of parliament which we consider as the mother of democracy in
India". He didn't stop with that! Showing his 'concern and love' for Dalit community, he said, "The stalling of parliamentary proceedings during the last one year was part of a pre-planned effort to get the ouster of Raja, a Dalit who had totally dedicated himself to the cause espoused by leaders like Dr BR Ambedkar. Raja is my affectionate brother."

Earlier in May 2010 too, Karunanidhi played his usual "Dalit Card" to defend Raja. He said, "Raja is a Dalit. That is why dominant forces are levelling malicious charges against him."

To remind the readers, way back in November 2008 too, Karunanidhi said, "Raja is being attacked for he is a Dalit!"

This is the emblematic 'Dravidian' politics, which has been going on for more than six decades in Tamil Nadu. And Karunanidhi is adept in playing it!

The Dravidian Racist leaders always have three "Aces" up their sleeves! (i)Aryan-Invasion Theory (ii) distorted Manu Dharma and (iii) Brahminical Oppression of Dalits, that is, Dravidian Card, Sudra Card and Dalit Card! The "Fourth Ace", which invariably turns out to be their "Trump Card" is Social Justice Card! They always claim that their actions have the sole objective of "Social Justice" and consistently their actions are of dubious nature. It is law of nature that dubious actions have devious objectives.

For the Dravidian leaders, self-interest is the sole objective. Holding the "Four Aces" they always win, for they play in the name of social justice. In due course of the game, while they emerge as winners, the Tamil people end up as "Jokers in the Pack"! The tragedy is Dalits are played as "Discards" in this game of cards.

The Dravidian Movement was built on the foundation of "Anti-Brahminism", which was a mixture of Aryan-Invasion Theory, distortion of Manu Dharma and the myth of Dalit oppression by Brahmins. But in the history of Tamil Nadu, the Dalits have never had issues with Brahmins and it was always the BCs and OBCs, who indulged in unbridled oppression against Dalits. Many instances of caste wars between OBCs/BCs/MBCs and Dalits, violence committed by OBCs/BCs against Dalits are recorded in history.

The Dravidian Parties have never promoted Dalit leadership and the Justice Party, which spearheaded the Dravidian Movement, was full of OBC leadership, who were rajas, zamindars, landlords, businessmen and financiers. They had hatred towards the oppressed classes and discriminated against them.

Writer Subbu in his hot selling Tamil Book "Dravidian Maya" (Trisakthi Publications, Chennai) writes, "Sir PT Thiyagarayar, President of Justice Party, which was pioneer for the Dravidian organizations, requested the government to settle the oppressed classes outside the Madras city limits. MC Raja, who was the leader of the oppressed classes then, had protested against Sir PT Thiyagarayar."

Subbu quotes another incident - Smt Sathyavanimuthu, a Scheduled Caste leader and politician, while speaking at the 'Untouchability Eradication Conference' at the 'Periyar Thidal' (Periyar grounds), told EV Ramasamy, "Your speech has empowered only those reformed cadres, who are sitting in front of you wearing black shirts. Brahmins never give any trouble to the oppressed classes. Information is that only the non-Brahmins cause sufferings to the oppressed classes."

As Mr Karunanidhi has played the Dalit Card to defend spectrum killer Raja and attempted to project him as a Dalit icon ala Dr Ambedkar, it is imperative to know how Dalits are treated in Karunanidhi's administration. Here is an apt example:

Mr Janarthanan now serves as a special sub collector of Kanyakumari district. He belongs to a scheduled caste listed in the constitutional order. On March 18, 2008, the ruling DMK organised a function to mark the distribution of free colour television sets in Nagercoil. DMK minister Suresh Rajan wanted to include the names of a few people in the list of beneficiaries. But, the sub collector refused to comply. Angered minister insulted him by calling his caste name. Mr Sheik Dawood, who was the personal assistant to the minister, assaulted the sub collector. This incident happened right in front of the general public. (Page-19, Dravidian Maya, Author  Subbu, Trisakthi Publications).

In May 2002, two dalits were forced to eat human excreta by DMK functionaries in Thinniyam village in Tiruchi district. In September 2002, in Kaundampatti village in Dindukkal district, a dalit agricultural worker was forced to drink urine for having lodged a complaint of trespass with the police against a person from a dominant caste.

Karunanidhi had said that Raja had totally dedicated himself to the cause espoused by leaders like Dr BR Ambedkar. While his contribution to the society in general and Dalit community in particular was absolutely nothing, his contribution to the party was immense, especially during the 2009 parliament elections, thanks to the Spectrum loot, which had allegedly played a vital role in "taking care" of the electorate resulting in DMK-Congress combine's victory. That was the main reason why DMK exerted pressure on the Congress to continue with Raja as the Telecom Minister in UPA's second term also. The Nira Radia Tapes have exposed the DMK shenanigans and the Dalit icon Raja's Machiavellian agenda.

The readers should not jump to conclusion that the nation's wealth would not have been looted had the ministry gone to Dayanidhi Maran. Otherwise, why should Dayanidhi Maran lobby himself for the Telecom portfolio, or, why should he force the Prime Minister to remove the particular clause regarding "Pricing" from the Terms of Reference of the EGOM in 2006? What explanation does he have for the Rs 600 crore he allegedly gave to Karunanidhi's wife Dayalu Ammal, as exposed by Nira Radia Tapes?

The events, which have unfolded and are still unfolding give a clear picture that the Dalit icon Raja had totally dedicated himself, not for the cause espoused by Dr Ambedkar, but only for the cause espoused by Karunanidhi and his third family, as exposed  again by Nira Radia Tapes.

By his statement on Raja, Karunanidhi has insulted Dr Ambedkar and the entire Dalit community. For Dravidian Leaders, politics is a game of cards, where Dalits are used as "Jokers" and "Discards", and Social Justice is a game of Chess, where Dalits are used as "Pawns".
When compared with the magnificent contribution of Dr Ambedkar to Mother India, the contribution of Dravidian icons like Annadurai and EV Ramasami are not even peanuts. While Karunanidhi, Jayalalitha and their ilk use Annadurai and EVR as "Aces", they use Ambedkar as "Joker" to declare themselves as winners in the political game of cards. After causing a permanent injury to Dr Ambedkar by reducing him to the level of EVR and Annadurai, an insult is added to the injury now by equating him with the Spectrum Killer.

A Raja is the latest addition to the list of Dalit politicians, who served the cause espoused by the OBC Dravidian leaders.
A Dalit politician need not join any Dravidian party, either to indulge in corruption or to serve the cause espoused by Dravidian leaders like Karunanidhi or Jayalalitha. He can accomplish both even by staying out. The best and apt example is Thirumavalavan, President of VCK (Viduthalai Chriuththaigal Katchi). His party's Motto is "refuse (to submit), transgress; rise (from shackles), return (the blow)" (Adanga Maru; Aththu Meeru; Thimiri Ezhu, Thiruppi Adi), which is nothing but a straight call for violence. As implied by their motto, the party cadres quite often indulge in violence and hooliganism.

Thirumavalavan, a self-styled Dalit leader, was brought into the limelight in the nineties by the Late Congressman GK Moopanar, who revolted against former prime minister Narasimha Rao's alliance with Jayalalitha and started his own Tamil Manila Congress. Since then, Thiruma has been having alliance either with Karuna or Jaya and in the bargain his fortunes have been on the rise and now his party functionaries are roaming around the state in Tatas and Toyotas, while their followers are still struggling to make ends meet. Following the footsteps of his Dravidian Masters,
Thirumavalavan also distorts Dr Ambedkar's writings, speeches and opinions and deliberately misleads his followers, thereby helping the Dravidian parties. For example, it is a well-known fact that Dr Ambedkar never supported the Aryan Invasion Theory, but Thiruma keeps peddling it along with his Dravidian racist counterparts to cheat the masses.

Thiruma is not only skilful in cajoling the Dravidian leaders, but he also has a unique knack of flirting around with the leaders of minority (Muslim and Christian) communities.
Though Dr Ambedkar's advocacy for Buddhism is well known, Thiruma on the one hand rejects it and on the other hand tacitly encourages his party cadres to convert to Christianity and Islam. He has a penchant for fighting for the causes of Muslims and Christians even at the cost of Dalit causes. At a time when Hindu Dalits were being persecuted by Christian Vanniyars in the district of Dindukkal, he was fighting for Muslims in Vellore district.

In January 2010, a Hindu Dalit by name Andi was murdered by Christian Vanniyars while he was celebrating Pongal in an Amman Temple in Perumalkovilpatti village, in Dindukkal. At about the same time in January 2010, another Hindu Dalit Sadaiyandi was attacked and human excreta were thrust inside his mouth by Christian Vanniars in Meikovilpatti village near Dindukkal. Thirumavalavan didn't even bother to visit the villages, but went to Vellore on January 20, 2010 and fought for Muslims' entry into an unused mosque inside the fort, which is under the control of ASI.

In another place called Eraiyur in Villupuram district, Christian Vanniars were discriminating against Dalit converts for years. Here again Thirumavalavan didn't act in support of his community, though he maintains a good relationship with Christian Clergy and Church leaders. In Kanthampatty village near Omalur, Salem district, Hindu Vanniars have been refusing entry for Hindu dalits inside the Draupathi Amman Temple for years. Thirumavalavan despite being closely acquainted with Vanniar leader and PMK (Pattali Makkal Katchi) Founder Dr Ramadoss, didn't bother to solve the problem there.

Though he claims to work for Dalit causes, in reality he has done literally nothing for the community, which he represents. His party is allegedly funded by minority organisations, which throws light on his proximity with those leaders, his fighting for their causes and his tacit help for conversions.
The sudden rise of Thirumavalavan in just over a decade shows, a politician need not be in power to get his fortunes increased and necessarily need not work for the causes espoused by Dr Ambedkar to attain the "status" of Dalit icon.

Karunanidhi, a great stalwart and experienced politician, cleverly uses Thiruma as a "pawn" in his cold war against Congress. Recently, when some of the local Congress leaders went hammer and tongs against DMK regime, Karuna induced Thiruma to talk against Congress and Thiruma not only obeyed it by giving an interview to a weekly magazine, but also went to the extent of inducing his cadres to desecrate Rajiv Gandhi's statue. But when matters turned for the worse, he brazenly wrote an apologetic letter to Sonia confirming his "respect and admiration" for Nehru family, though he had spared nothing to take on Congress at every meet in support of LTTE earlier. And Thiruma doesn't feel shy of being used by Karuna as long as his personal interests are served.

Tamil Nadu has another self styled Dalit leader Dr Krishnasamy, president of Puthiya Thamizhagam, who does nothing for the community. Though he doesn't have as much a following as Thirumavalavan, he too functions in a similar way, hobnobbing with Dravidian parties and flirting with minority leaders.

Tamil Nadu has witnessed truly great Dalit leaders genuinely working for the poor and the downtrodden.
True nationalists silently remembered the great Congressman, freedom fighter and Dalit leader Kakkan, who served as a member of the constituent assembly of India, member of parliament, president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and in various ministerial posts in Congress governments in the erstwhile Madras State between 1957 and 1967. Immediately after retirement, Kakkanji traveled by bus and during his final years, he was seen lying on the floor of a hospital in Madurai like an orphan with no one nearby to attend to him. When he died, he had zero assets! When he was alive, he had worked for the education of untouchables and fought for the entry of Dalits in temples. He was encouraged, motivated and supported by Vaidyanatha Iyer, who led the Dalits into the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple and Rajaji passed an ordinance for the temple entry of Dalits, when he was the chief minister of the erstwhile Madras province.

The Congress party, even while celebrating his birth centenary in June (delayed by a year), exposed only the factionalism within, and the sycophancy on Nehru family, but not an iota of respect to Kakkanji. Neither Thiruma nor Krishnasamy, nor any of the Dravidian leaders remembered him. The Dravidian government, which spent huge amount of taxpayers' money for the celebration of centenaries of Dravidian racist icons such as EVR and Annadurai, didn't spend even a fraction of it to observe the centenary of this great Dalit icon, who genuinely toiled for their upliftment.

Apart from Kakkanji (1908- 1981), the state had witnessed an array of dalit leaders such as Pandit Ayothidasar (1845-1914), Rettaimalai Srinivasan (1860-1945), MC Raja (1883-1945) and N Sivaraj (1892-1964) and many others, who truly fought for the empowerment of oppressed classes and did yeomen service for dalit causes.

                After
Independence both the Indian National Congress and the Dravidian Parties, have forgotten all these icons even while they were using Dr Ambedkar's name only to dupe the gullible masses. The dalit politicians, who associated themselves with these political parties, were all self-centered and they took care of only their personal and family interests. None of them bothered to espouse the dalit causes.

Tamil Nadu has been under the clutches of the two major Dravidian parties alternatively since 1967. The state still has hundreds of worshipping places refusing entry to dalits, hundreds of manual scavengers, scores of caste walls separating dalits and OBCs/BCs/MBCs, two-tumbler system in hundreds of tea shops, separate burial grounds for dalits and refusal of entry even in saloons!
In certain villages, the dalits are not allowed to walk on the public road, wear chappals, ride bicycles, wear dhotis folded, wear towels on shoulders, use common wells and get clothes washed or ironed. Laundaries have separate almirahs for dalits! But the Chief Minister is talking of the disgraced Raja dedicating himself for espousing the cause of dalit prajas.

Karunanidhi has only used Raja as a pawn in typical Dravidian style. While the Dynasties have been hugely benefitted, the dalit king is likely to end up as a scapegoat. The dalits of this country must realise that they need only Ambedkars and Kakkans and not Rajas and Thirumas. Will they?
