Knowing your previous birth – astrologically.

The Life Research Academy started in Hyderabad by one Dr Newton and his wife Dr Lakshmi conducts workshops to help people understand the goals of present life by knowing about the past lives! This is based on the age-old theory of Karma and its continuing cycle keeping the souls in bondage. The prospect of knowing one's past birth fascinates many people. The Maharishis were capable of 'seeing' the past and future of people just be looking at them. 'Thrikaala gyanam' due to their spiritual strength helped them 'see' like this. Another factor that helps in 'seeing' particularly the past is by analyzing the way one behaves in the present life or by what one experiences in the present life.

The 'vasanas' of the past births continue in the present birth.
If there is some particular tendency seen specifically in a person, it can be said that he has carried it from the previous birth.

Similarly the experiences (both good and bad) of the previous births give their respective results in the present birth. It is possible to relate an experience that 'sucks' one in the present birth to a causative happening in the previous birth. Such experiences can be logically explained. One can understand such connections very well from naadi readings of many people.

The native suffers heart problems and his family life is not harmonious, problems arising on account of children or wife.

Astrologically speaking, a person's natal chart does contain indicators for knowing the past and the future birth as well. In this post, I am writing on astrological factors to identify the past birth.

Varahamihira has given just one verse each for identifying past and future birth. But he has indicated that this issue has been dealt at length by seers of yore and one must know what they have said. On his part he gives only one verse on how to identify the previous birth.

Verse 25014, Brihat jathaka :-
"Guru, Chandra and Sukra, Ravi and Kuja, and Sani and Budha bring people from Devaloka, Pitruloka, Tiryagloka and Narakaloka respectively. According to the position of the lord of the Drekkana occupied by the most powerful of the sun or the moon, we have to predict the high, middle or low state of the man in his previous birth."


Based on Bhattaothpala's commentary for this verse, we have to first see the sun and moon in the rasi chart (D-1). We have to see which of these two is powerful.

Choose the powerful one among the sun or the moon and see its position in the D-3 (drekkana) chart. The lord of that house holds the key for poorva janma!

If such a lord in D-3 is Jupiter, predict that the person was in devaloka before being born on earth.

If such a lord in D-3 is Moon or venus, predict that the person was in Pitruloka, before being born on earth

If such a lord in D-3 is Sun or Mars, predict that the person was in Tiryagloka before being born on earth.

If such a lord in D-3 is Mercury or Saturn, predict that the person was in Narakaloka before being born on earth.

If such a lord is exalted or in benefic positions,
know that the person has enjoyed high status in that loka.

If debilitated or in malefic combinations, know that he had a degraded life there.



Now about the lokas:-


Devaloka is an exalted plane of existence peopled with souls in higher order of awareness and enlightenment.

Pitruloka is a plane where departed ones live before taking another birth. This plane is also higher than our plane of existence on earth.

Tiryagloka is a plane of inferior order where souls with evil karma have to reside.

Narakaloka is a plane of much inferior order, where souls having excessive evil karma in their backlog have to spend their time.


Another text on how to predict the previous birth is Phaladeepika by Manthreshwara.

In the 14^th chapter there comes information on astrological pointers to know previous birth.
According Phaladeepika, the 9^th house holds the key.


If the 9^th lord in natal chart is exalted, the previous birth was in a high society of good people.

If the 9^th lord in natal chart is in debility or in enemy's sign, the previous birth was in a different country.

If the 9^th lord in natal chart is in his own house or in a friend's house, the previous birth was in the same country to which the person belongs. (Manthreshwara meant Bharatha varsha).

In such a case, if the 9^th lord happens to be Jupiter, the person was born in Aryavartha – in the area between Himalayas and Vindhyas.

In such a case, if the 9^th lord happens to be Venus or Moon, the person was born near Punya nadhis or sacred rivers such as Kaveri.

In such a case, if the 9^th lord happens to be Mercury, the person was born near Kshethras of Gods like Vishnu or Shiva. (places such as Srirangam or Chidambaram).

In such a case, if the 9^th lord happens to be Saturn, the person was born in Mleccha desa – outside Bharatha varsha.

In such a case, if the 9^th lord happens to be Sun, the person was born in a place of forests and / or mountains.

In such a case, if the 9^th lord happens to be Mars, the person was born in abandoned places or places where living was difficult.


Now about the kind of birth – whether as plant life or animal life:-

(The souls are born in four forms according to astrology and Hindu Thought – as devas, humans, animals and plant life.)

If the 9^th lord is placed in Prishtodhya rasi that happens to be fixed sign, the previous birth was that of some vegetation.

If the 9^th lord is placed in Seershodhaya rasi that happens to be movable sign, the previous birth was that of some living being, either animal or man.

If the 9^th lord is placed in the signs of exaltation or own house or friend's house of the lagna lord, the previous birth was that of a human being.

If the 9^th lord is placed in neutral sign of the lagna lord, the previous birth was that of an animal.

If the 9^th lord is placed in an enemy sign of the lagna lord, the previous birth was that of a bird.

In this way, the clues are given for finding out what we were in previous birth.

However, when I discovered that I was a famous poet in one of earlier births so I started writing poems. Reflecting my mindset the poems are on the genre of mysticism." Dwelling a little about his own past life health issues that carried over into the present Dr. Newton explains, "I always had some kind of ailment in my abdominal region. Past life regression explained to me the reason. In my earlier birth as a Tibetan at the age of sixty, I was pronounced dead when alive and thrown to the vultures, as was the custom in Tibet.

The painful experience I had undergone being eaten alive was the cause of my abdominal miseries, the problem was solved after I discovered my past." The workshop also dealt on topics like karma, self-healing, emotion, and past-life talents carried over to the present birth among others. Says Dr.

Newton who with his wife Dr. Lakshmi founded the Life Research Academy in Hyderabad, "The purpose of such past life regression workshops are to make people understand the human body that is like a dress we wear and cast off. Just like one needs to remove weeds in the garden, one should know about the past to understand the future better."

Your past-birth karmas and Nadi Astrology

Karma is the metaphysical law of causality. It is comparable to the physical law of Newton: every action causes an equal and opposite reaction. You do something in this lifetime and it comes back to you in the next lifetime.

One's natal chart is clearly the representation of one's karma. For two decades I have been researching nadi astrology. The nadi astrological leaves are written by Siddhas and I have consulted almost all of them. The Siddhas use their intuitive ability to look into the past and future of the individuals. My case-study involves 500 people. My finding is that the future prediction is not 100% correct in all cases. It varies from person to person and the average accuracy ranges from 30 to 55 %. Why are not the Siddhas unable to predict 100%? I have put this question to the Siddhas themselves. The answers came and are interesting. They said that the clients who came with a sincere frame of mind got better results than the clients who were cynical. This is true in daily life. You become as you think.

If nadi leaves are not going to give the exact prediction is it any good to still consult them? The answer is ' yes'. The nadi is a great source of education. It links your past life with the present life and teaches you methods to change your life. For instance, if one had raped many women in his past life, he continues this habit in this lifetime also. Similarly if one had been a saint in previous life times, he comes back as a saint again. Once you identify what you had done in the past, then you can correct it in this lifetime. Again, from my own research I have found that people are unable to change their life-habits, even though I tell them in no uncertain terms what they need to do. For educational purposes I want to give a list of past karmas that produce situations in this lifetime, see table.

Remedies in Nadi Astrology

Nadi astrology offers remedies for all kinds of bad karma. This involves visits to certain temples, performing rituals like donation to saints, virgins, married women and others. The remedies are based on the karma that each one has done in their past lives. Another important remedy is worshipping the yantra of the planet properly energized. It is better to worship the yantra of the devata of the planet rather than the planet itself. Also, it is important to pay a visit to Suryanarkoil regardless of what your karma is. The unique nature of Suryanarkoil is that the planets here are devoid of their weapons. Mantras used in the temple also do not refer to their malefic qualities. According to tradition, Lord Siva commissioned planets to be benign at Suryanarkoil.
