Karunanidhi versus kaalam!

Diseases caused by Purva Janma karma

The advertisement for the free health insurance scheme by the Tamilnadu government has raised quite a stir with Ms Jayalalithaa questioning the ‘rational’ credentials of Mr Karunanidhi. (News report at the end of this article). The ad is quite interesting in that those who designed it have unknowingly incorporated all the core concepts of Lord of Death with an allusion to the way the DMK government functions.

The ad says “காலம் வீசும் கயிற்றைத் - தடுக்கும் கலைஞர் காப்பீட்டுத் - திட்டம் .”

The entity mentioned in words in “kaalam’.

The illustration shown is “Yama”!

The beneficiary who is supposed to be protected by this scheme is afflicted by “Mrithyu”!

These 3 entities – kaala, Yama and Mrithyu – though understood as same, are different.

Bhagawan Sri Krishna identifies Himself as Kaala and Yama in Bhagawad Gita. But Mrithyu is a totally different entity.
Krishna says that He is ‘Kaala” among the reckoners -“Kaala: kalayathaamaham” (BG 10-30)

Kaala is Kaala purusha who meticulously keeps track of time. The zodiac around us is recognized as the Kaala purusha. The 360 degree shell that is enveloping the visible universe is the Time keeper at the macro level.

Kaala is everywhere starting from the micro level to the macro level. At the micro level, ‘truti’ is the minutest time which is being recorded in the Universe.

Truti is the time taken by a needle to pierce a lotus leaf! By the time we take one inhalation and one exhalation (one count of prana), 60 trutis are gone. Even the minutest action done by our body, our thought, the word spoken and the action done in the truti is recorded by Kaala by means of its angas (parts) which are 26 in number. This includes our atman (jeeva) and the Paramathman (God). The rest (24 in number) include the Natural forces in us and around us such as the 5 elements, the 5 senses, the different levels of forces in our body and those in Nature in the cosmos.

No one can escape the results of actions done from truti time onwards. The Courts may let go an offender, or a Karunanidhi may let loose the criminals on the birth days of leaders, but Kaala will not show any leniency. Whatever one does – both good and bad – will be recorded and corresponding result will come back to the person in this birth or in future birth.

The solacing information is that, though the record is automatically being done, the fructification of the karma takes some time – mostly transferred to the next birth. That gives some time and scope for rectification. Repentance and rectification do help in reducing the impact of the karma done, so that when it actually fructifies, it comes with reduced impact.

Usually the bad karma (sin) is returned as Disease.

There is a saying “Poorva janma krutham paapam Vyaadhi roopENa peeditham

The paapam (sins) done in the previous birth catches one in the form of disease.
In this comes the role for Mrithyu!

Mrithyu is a female. She is Mrithyu Devi.
She is formed from the body of the Four faced Brahman.

Here we must know the difference between Brahman and the Four faced Brahman.

Brahman is the All pervading, omni potent and omni scient Supreme God who is identified as Narayana. It is in Him all worlds exist and He dwells in all of them. This two-way connection is the meaning of Narayana. He is the Witness and also the facilitating God at whose behest the worlds, different universes and numerous Gods carry out the function of keeping up the universes. The foremost among such numerous gods are the Three-some Brahma – Vishnu – Shiva who heads the portfolios of Creation, sustenance and Devolution. The Brahma of this trio is known as the Four faced Brahma.

Brahma means that which grows and that which is big. There is no limit to growth. Therefore it is Brahma. Brahman also means the same. This four faced Brahma takes care of the Creating job in a particular system of Universe (there many universes with their own Trio) by growing big on all four sides. That is why he is known as the Four faced Brahma.

At the beginning of a kalpa (Brahma’s day), creation was initiated by him (analogous to Big bang). The particles (prakrithi) keep expanding and moving. This resulted in over crowding. Brahma thought of destroying the worlds so that they can be regenerated and further growth can be made possible. So from his body he created a woman called Mrithyu Devi who was clad in half black and half red dress!

When Brahma ordained her to kill the created beings, she felt sad and shed tears for the kind of portfolio given to her. Brahma collected the tear drops in his palms and consoled her. But she refused to kill the beings and went on to do penance again and again until she came to accept the role given to her.

But she was still hesitant to do the job of killing beings or bringing death to them. That is when Brahma said that her tear drops collected by him would reach the people as disease. When Time comes (as recorded by Kaala), the disease will bring out death of the person. By this promise by Brahma, Mrithyu Devi was spared of bringing out death directly by herself. This story is narrated by Narada to Akambanan in the 364th chapter of Shanthi parva in Mahabharatha.

Thus, disease as cause of death is associated with Mrithyu Devi.

The Mrithyunjana japa prays for death as a natural and painless happening just as how the flowers and fruits get detached from the plant naturally due to ripening.

The aim of any program of good health must begin with building up the defense mechanism of the body. The body must be disease free. The present government’s liquor policy is something that is a complete anathema to welfare and good health of citizens. The harm it is doing to millions of people by making them addicted to liquor is more serious and wipes off whatever help the government seeks to do by way of health insurance.

With Mrithyu getting settled in a person and Kaala keeping up the clock, the role for Yama comes when Kaala stops the clock. Krishna identifies Himself as Yama among the subduers. “Yama: samyamathaam aham” ( BG 10-29) Yama is he who is skilled in controlling beings.

What is meant by this? It means that Yama can not be influenced by anyone. He is impartial and does his job without any fear or fervor – this is something impractical for the leadership at the helm in Tamilnadu! This nature of Yama is described in many puranas. But there was an occasion when Yama could not do his job. It is mentioned in Skanda purana. When a king called Keerthimaan was ruling, all his subjects were dharmic due to his influence. As a result all the people were attaining Moksha. This left Yama without job and he complained of this to Vishnu. Vishnu assured that the world will not be like that always. As long as Keerthimaan was there, people also would be like him. Once he leaves the world, the people also would change.

From this it is known that Dharmic life defeats the designs of Yama.

If a person leads a dharmic life, Mrithyu devi can not approach him with diseases.

But Kaala will do his job unhindered. Once he stops the clock for a dharmic person, the person will reach the non-returnable abode. Mrithyu and Yama can not come near such a person. This is the import of what is death and why death and the role of Yama or Kaala or Mrithyu.

A king (Keerthimaan) was instrumental in making his subjects freed from Yama and Mrithyu. This information is given as a dictum by sage Kashyapa to Ilan in the 73rd chapter of Shanthi parva of Mahabharatha.

The sage says that the sins of the subjects reach the ruler. The ruler is responsible for making people upright and dharmic. If the subjects behave wrongly or in adharmic ways, the king is entitled to correct them by all means. His ultimate aim is to make the people dharmic and lead a sin-free life. If they behave otherwise, it means the king has not been effective in checking them. All the misdeeds and ill-behavior of such subjects are therefore the result of the inefficiency and improper action of the ruler. Such a ruler will bequeath the results of all the misdeeds of his subjects.

This is how Dharma works.

The numerous ways of corruption that has permeated the Tamil society from the level of ministers to common man – and lately to the extent of even killing the Democratic way of polling by selling votes for a price - will have to be answered by the ruler, according to the way Destiny or Dharma devan works. Dharma deva is another name for Yama! He sees no discrimination. He is ruthless. The ‘rational’ Chief Minister has to understand the rationale of this simple Dharma and the ways of Dharma deva.

The Tamil kings had a good grasp of Dharma and the way Yama operates. 25th patalam of திரு விளையாடல் புராணம் (“பழி அஞ்சின படலம் ”) tells about the Pandyan king Kulotthungan who received the blessings of Lord Somasundara to see how Yama functions. The Tamil society has come a long way by adopting dharmic way of life. The rulers had been adept in making the people upright so that Mrithyu did not enter their country. It is obvious that those who call themselves as Dravidas and Dravidian leaders have eschewed the path of Tamils.

Lastly, a word for those who want to know how to outwit Yama and Mrithyu.

The method for this is narrated by sage Panchashika to the King Janaka in the 364th chapter in Shanthi parva of Mahabharatha.

The sage recommends that by doing ‘daanam’ and ‘yajyam’, one can overcome these two.

Daanam means charity.

Yagyam are many. But japa yagjyam is the best among all yajnas. Krishna identifies Himself as Japa yajna among all yajnas.
Japa is the continuous repetition of a mantra or even a nama of the lord.
Those who are initiated into Gayathri japa has to do it everyday for protection against Mrithyu and Yama.
Those who are not, can adopt a japa for the God they like very much.

Shiva panchakshari or Narayana ashtaakshari or the japa on any god they adore, say on Muruga or Ganesha or Devi or Rama or Krishna will do. This must be done in multiples of 9. 108 is the ideal number for japa.

In this kaliyuga, nama-smarana or japam of a name of God will bring excellent results.

Let Daanam and japam be the two eyes of the people!

Jaya raps Karuna on `God of Death' ads

CHENNAI
KALAIGNAR HEALTH SCHEME PROPAGANDA

AIADMK general secretary Ms Jayalalithaa on Sunday charged that chief minister M. Karunanidhi had been maintaining an image of being a `rationalist' while remaining a `believer.' She also condemned Mr Karunanidhi for releasing advertisements in which "the chief minister has shown himself as a power that could prevent Yama, the God of Death."

A few days ago, Tamil Nadu government released advertisements lauding its free public health insurance scheme in which the God of Death was shown to be prevented by the scheme named after the CM and it had slogans which praised the CM as one who prevents the God of Death from throwing his `rope of love.' Ms Jayalalithaa said the advertisements had brought to fore the belief of Mr Karunanidhi who maintained an image of a `rationalist.' "When chief minister cannot even stop Tamil Nadu's rights being taken away, how can he stop Yama from throwing his rope over lives?" asked the AIADMK supremo in a statement here.

She said Mr Karunanidhi had abandoned his rationalist ideals to further his own interests. "He continues to call himself a rationalist.

But his family members are consulting astrologers and follow their advice. As a result of this, Mr Karunanidhi is wearing yellow shawl. He has not given a proper explanation till date for his wearing a yellow shawl," said the AIADMK chief.

"Chief minister has accepted the Poorna Kumbham respect offered by Angala Parameswari temple at Thirukkuvalai. He reportedly prayed at that temple.
Why is he projecting an image of an atheist and condemn the DMK party cadre who sport tilak on their foreheads?" asked Ms Jayalalithaa.

She charged that the chief minister invoked the name of Lord Yama to appeal to the belief of common people. "He will go to any extent to showcase himself as a protector of the interests of the people in the state.
This is just an example," she noted.

She accused chief minister of adopting `double standards' in public life.
