Dear Jayasree Madam:

Another golden cap Article.

I have not read full transcript of VM's writing, but your exceptional rebuttal proves how much "deeply he is influenced by western academic working pattern" in writing this Article.

extracts from http://www.columbia.edu/itc/mealac/pollock/sks/papers/death_of_sanskrit.pdf

"At all events, the fact remains that well before the consolidation of colonialism, before even the establishment of the Islamicate political order, the mastery of tradition had become an end in itself for Sanskrit literary culture"
No serious scholars (from India or abroad wrote any rebuttals worth of) and he become one of celebrated scholar to get Padma Vhibushan award!! If you read this entire paper, he sugar coats Sanskrit and Indian culture and underneath attacks them as divisive and dead.
Same is followed by VM.

It is time entire "Tamizh writing community" take note of these patterns and write "Clear rebuttal, point by point" as an evidence.

You set an excellent example for the future generations to follow.

Regards
Gopi

Another important point to note is that, before writing such detailed analysis, we should understand about the author, his motives, his previous works and intentions.

Actually i wish your articles could be published as "rebuttal" to VM's in Dinamani.

Amma, very interesting and illuminating! The depth and width of your knowledge w.r.t. Tamil and history deserve a standing ovation. Nothing seems to escape your eagle's eyes. :-) Your superior research assuaged the pain caused by the hurtful phrases in Mr Vairamuthu's article. Thank you!

KG Dhouhithri said...

Amma, pardon me if I'm wrong but, in objection # 6, I think Mr Vairamuthu meant to say that "Mukthi" was made easier by focusing on Bhagavan's Kalyana Gunas (he didn't use that phrase, of course :D) instead of focusing on tough paths like Yagnyas, etc.. This "shift in focus" is supposed to be the "new concession" (if at all it is indeed new :D).

Amma, your article makes me regret not taking Tamil Arts, Tamil Literature and Archaeology as my profession. Thanks for being an inspiration and Mr Gopi is right - your article should be the rebuttal that Dinamani should publish.

Only a person who knows Tamil literature , alwar's bhakthi, sanathana dharma, acharya krupa can give Point_war rebuttal to the blasphemous article. Only a bhagavatha can understand and write commentaries to alwar works . As andal in nachiar tirumozhi given a metaphor like things kept for homam spoiled by fox , he has spoiled the Tamil prabhandam by spewing venom into it. This research should be forwarded to Dinamani for immediate publication.

Thanks Mr Gopi. It is doubtful that Tamil writing community will wake up, as the current generation of mainstream writers are heavily biased towards either Dravidian or exclusivity of Tamil identity. They see the sangam litt and even Silappadhikaram through coloured glasses only. Those who have grasped the real stuff, can never come to the mainstream media as there is none who can identify them. Remember a discussion we had some time ago? As far as I know two gems relevant to current times were presented. But those who reviewed them were not evolved ones to understand the value of those gems.

One such article is very relevant to Vairamuthu controversy, as it is doubtful whether Vairamuthu did full justice to his write-ups on Maanikkavachagar and Thirumoolar, he presented some time ago in the same series. Only those well versed in Saivite litt, Vedic and Tamil litt can say that Vairamuthu did not commit any transgression in those articles. The article I refer to went into nearly 1000 Vedic references in Saivite litt. Those who are supposed to understand the need to bring out such articles to the fore are absolutely unaware of the value of it.

So I am pretty convinced that this is the battle fought by individuals only. Social media is the tool to spread our views and gradually people get awakened. That's all. And we do it on our own conviction.

My reply:

Dear Mr Sudharshan,

It is obvious Vairamuthu had not even read all the songs of Thiruppavai. His observation on Thiruppavai nonbu in the context of Kathyayani nonbu testifies this. He has referred to only secondary texts and not primary texts and urai by acharyas. Anmeekam is not his cup of tea. I am sure he must have bungled in his articles on Saivites also. Wish someone well versed in Devara, Thiruvachagam go through those articles and make sure no untruth gets into posterity.

I sent the link of this and the previous article to Dinamani, its editor and Vairamuthu.

Dear Ms Jayasre Saranathan,
May I thank you for your well-researched rebuttal? I do doubt that Vairamuthu has read all the writings of Andal and Alwars, and his initial attack is based on a fly-by US based “so called” researcher. His own writings betray his ignorance. While he has apologized for hurting the feelings of theistic people of Tamil Nadu, I hope he stops straying into areas of spiritual writings, which are not his specialty. I was struck by your lucid exposition of the relationship between Man and God as follows:

Thanks for your ongoing vigil against those engaged in dfisinformation and distortion of Andal. Vembar K Ranganathan

Thanks Mr Vembar Ranganathan.

Let's all remain vigilant and sensitize the people around us.

I have just finished reading your second article beautifully exposing Vairamuthu on 18 counts. Really I am not able to find suitable words to express my sincere appreciation to you for the excellent replies.

Just as the Mahabhaarata War was fought for 18 days where ultimately Dharma won over adharma and just as Srimad Bhagavad Geeta contains 18 Chapters which are the quint essence of the entire Vedaas and Vedaantaas, your 18 points, not only bring out clearly the perverted ideas surreptitiously mentioned by Vairamuthu in his research on Aandaal, but also highly enlightening to the Devotees of Aandaal like myself.

Hats off to you Madam for your great service to the Hindu Sanaatana Dharma. Am quite sure, Blessings of Aandaal, Azhwar and All Aachaaryals will bring all auspiciousness to you.

Earlier also I had posted my appreciation to your first article on the subject.
I have been attending Kaalakshepams and Upanyaasams by Sri Vaishnava Scholars on topics like Tiruppaavai, Srimad Rahastraya Saaram, Bhagavad Vishayam and Gita Bhaashyam. But I personally learnt a lot on going thro your two articles. Especially your explaining the Tatvam of Nappinnai Piraatti and Neela Devi are awesome. But traditionally in our regular Upanyaasams, it is usually said that Neela Devi (whose Amsam is only Nappinnai Piraatti) as well as Bhooma Devi Themselves are the other Forms or Amsams of Sri Devi Naachiyaar only. In this respect only, I find a slight difference in your explanation.
I have also learnt thro' Kaalakshepams that wherever words like woman's bosoms and tender/small hips are used in any Divya Prabhanda Paasuram, they only indicate Gnana, Bhakti and Vairaagya respectively which are the essential pre-requisites of a seeker of Moksha, the Parama Purushaartaa. But now after these controversies, I wonder why at all such seemingly erotic words were used; rather the actual words meant could themselves have been used. Is there any other significance apart from following “Sanga Kaala Marabu” or the poetic way of usage? I shall be grateful if you can throw some light on this point.
Further, I would like to share that there was an article in Nrusimha Priya Journal some years back, wherein it was clearly brought out that Thiruvalluvar has in his mind or refer to only Lord Vishnu / Sriman Narayanan, not only in his first verse of the Tirukkural but also in many other verses and that Tirukkural is also the essence of all the Vedas and Vedaantic thoughts only.

In the first Tirukkural itself as you have pointed out, the words "Aadhi Bhagavan" denotes only Sriman Narayanan. (Lord Raama and Narayana are the same). Because as per Sruties, He is only the Aadhi Jagat Kaaranam (Primordial Cause for the entire Creation). Again as you pointed out in some other article, the word “Bhaga” meaning the six basic (Kalyana) Gunaas also is attributable to Sriman Narayana only. So “Bhagawan” means only Lord Vishnu or Sriman Narayana. But we call so many demi gods also as Bhagawan, like Guru Bhagawan, Sani Bhagawan. It is because that these demi gods have traces of some of the Gunaas of the Lord Narayana. Similarly, we call our Mothers as equivalent to God, it is because, in respect of Selfless love towards the Child, Mother is like the God Himself.

If you can get the above detailed article published in Nrusimha Priya, it will be of interest to you, I personally feel. Wishing you all the best and Congratulating you once again for the excellent articles,

Daasan, Krishnan. S, Nanganallur.

Madam,
I am reading your article for a long time. I am a fan of your writing.
I have one doubt. tamil and Sanskrit came from Load Siva as per our tradition. why we don't have any evidence to prove(oldest) that.
as per wiki written language started by Egyptian (Egyptian hieroglyphs 2690 BC) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_languages_by_first_written_accounts
why people using symbols or cuneiform. but our tradition says Load Siva gives grammar to Tamil and Sanskrit more than 6000 years ago.
If we have grammar, why we don't have any evidence to prove
forgive me if my question is silly

Rama said...

@Saminathan
Sir there is proof of grammar in the Veda itself. In the Taittriya samhita 6th kanda(book) 4th prashna(Chapter), 7th Anuvaak(Para) 3rd panchashat(Group of 50 words). The mantra goes like this

" vā́g vái párācy ávyākr̥tāvadat
té devā́ índram abruvan \
imā́ṃ no vā́caṃ vyā́kurv íti
sò 'bravīt \
váraṃ vr̥ṇai máhyaṃ caiváiṣá vāyáve ca sahá gr̥hyātā íti
tásmād aindravāyaváḥ sahá gr̥hyate
tā́m índro madʰyatò 'vakrámya vyā́karot"

This is the translation,
"In ancient times speech was unclear, undifferentiated. The devas requested Indra, 'Please make speech more refined(Vyakrta) or clear for us'. He said 'I want a boon, let the Aindravaayavya soma cup be drawn in my name in the Agnishtoma soma Yajna'. The devas agreed and thus Indra made speech more refined(vyā́karot)"

In this verse we see an ancient attempt to create a more refined language. The word Vyakrtm(refine or make legible) is the root word for the sanskrit word for grammar Vyakaranam. Thus we have a reference in the Veda for the Aindram(Grammar composed by Indra) school of grammar referred to by Tolkappiyar in the tolkappiyam.

Madam do you have any further ideas on this?

I had recently come across an article on how the Tamil Chair at Harvard is nothing but a scan. An excerpt from that article goes like this: According to Dr. Ayyadurai, “The fundraising effort in the name of setting up a Tamil Chair is a ruse that exemplifies Harvard’s habitual exploitation of indigenous people. This is an egregious example akin to a burglar asking you to pay money to buy a rickety ladder to rob your own home. Harvard is asking Tamilians to pay $6 million for a professorship that will be used to rob their own historic artifacts worth trillions of dollars representing the ‘Holy Grail’ of the world’s most highly-prized indigenous knowledge.” Harvard will then proceed to use access to those artifacts to rewrite and hegemonize Tamil history, an unfortunate and recurrent process that Harvard has done for far too long to many indigenous cultures.

We need to raise public, especially those who really care for Tamil AND our anciant religion, traditions, and culture, to see that any existing evidence is not robbed by this mob proclaiming they are doing this to save Tamil. Save Tamil from what? From enlightening its own people?

Namaskaram Mr S.Krishnan.

Thanks for your wishes and blessings. You have asked heavy subjects for which my replies will be too long. Please bear with me for that.

Coming to your questions, they have been clarified by me in my old articles in this blog. You wrote:

//Especially your explaining the Tatvam of Nappinnai Piraatti and Neela Devi are awesome. But traditionally in our regular Upanyaasams, it is usually said that Neela Devi (whose Amsam is only Nappinnai Piraatti) as well as Bhooma Devi Themselves are the other Forms or Amsams of Sri Devi Naachiyaar only. In this respect only, I find a slight difference in your explanation.//

Let me reply like this:

We start from the very basic injunctions of Vedas, “He was one without a second”. Means He is just all in one that includes his consort also. Then ‘It willed, may I become many, and it became many”. In this a Will is mentioned. So the One is now identified as {One + Will}. The Will is the Thought Force of the One. Without the Thought Force, no one, even that One (Brahman or Creator or Purusha) cannot do anything. That Thought is his consort. That Thought directs Him. That Thought directs us (jivatmas) to Him. In that sense, that Thought is Lakshmi.

She is in His heart. She is also the Thought Force of the Trimurthys (which we grasp with further expansion of Creation) which I pointed out to be present in Silappadhikaram and also in ‘Devyuvacha’ Lakshmi stotram. She is also the ‘Purshakara bhoothai’ – in her capacity as His Will in Vaishnava literature.

So the basic concepts are One and His Will which we call as Brahman and his Will or Perumal and Piratti or Narayana and Sri. The following link will take you to my article on how I derive the Sri concept from a musing on Ramayana.

http://jayasreesaranathan.blogspot.in/2011/04/thoughts-on-sri-rama-navami-open-letter.html
Coming to the Bhoo and NeeLa, the world that we live in is the last unit of creation. In this the Brahman and Its Will are to be present in their much simplified form. At this level, the manifestation is bhu, bhuvah and Svah. In simple understanding they are physical, vital and mental manifestations. In our world, the bhu is physical land, bhuvah is her pinnai, i.e., magnetic sphere as it is formed from the molten iron core of earth and Svah is the prosperity that arises from these.

In other words, Bhu is Bhu devi, Bhuvah is NeeLa Devi and Svah is Sri Devi. Bhagawan is omnipresent by encompassing all these three. Like this we can keep expanding the ideas, in consonant with what scriptures say and also in tune with our ordinary understanding of the world.

These are the basics. It is for us to extract the meaning as per the context. People may look at the words and sentences. But once we have grasped the basic concept, we will start understanding the texts in whichever way they explain. For example, the two consorts Hri and Sri of Purusha Sooktham and even none in Vaikuntha!!

I have written 7 articles on Nappinnai – NeeLa Devi connection. I will give the 5th and 6th in that series on deciphering NeeLa sooktham

All Azhwars have written in Sanga Tamizh, completely adhering to grammar and in Sanga marabu only. That was the education in their times which I will write about in my next article on Vairamuthu controversy. Entire works of Andal are in Sanga Tamizh. Her Thiruppavai is set in Mullaith thinai for which Maayon is the God. Her Nachiyar thirumozhi is inspired by Srimad Bhagavatham and set in Agam grammar of Sangam Tamil. Thirmangai Azhwar’s Siriya Thirumadal and Periya Thirumadal are purely of Sanga marabu of ‘Madal oorthal’. The beauty is that within the extraneous form of words and expressions adhering to Sangam grammar and Tamil , they have hidden the secrets of knowledge of Bhagawan.
Particularly, Thiruppavai is so simple in words but too difficult for interpretation as one can find multiple meanings to each pasuram of Thiruppavai. That is why Acharya Ramananuja made that famous statement ‘திருப்பல்லாண்டுக்கு ஆள் கிடைக்கினும், திருப்பாவைக்கு ஆள் கிடையாது.”

Simple example is ‘parai’. This word appears at 9 places in Thiruppavai- each with a different implication or relevance. And finally she says that she has only explained about Parai throughout Thiruppavai. What is that? All these are said in sanga marabu and sanga Tamil. Inwardly the meanings are different and lofty. I have attempted to understand this ‘parai’ in 3 articles.

True. Let me give a not-told-before meaning for ‘agara muthala’
Agaram – the letter அ means number 8 in Tamil. This also refers to எட்டெழுத்து which is nothing but Narayanaya Namaha.

For publishing in Nrusimhapriya, I have no contacts or contact address. If someone can give, I will send.

Respected Jayasree Madam,

At the outset, adiyen very much grateful to you Madam for the fantastic and elaborated point-wise replies to my earlier response. Of course, I am yet to go thro the various links referred by you, which I will do definitely.

Regarding the Pasurams of Aazhwaars including Sri Aaandaal which are in chaste Sanga Tamizh strictly adhering to the Sanga Kaala Grammar and Marabu, I now fully agree with your explanation. Had the Aazhwaars not adhered to those norms during their times, perhaps their Prabhandams would not have been accepted. Moreover, it now clicks to me (on reading your lines that the word "Parai" has been used in Thiruppavai in 9 different meanings) that there may be so many other/different meanings also to the seemingly erotic words which should be properly intrepreted.
It is very true that NO ONE can fully explain the Thiruppavai Paasurams; that is why it is said that Thiruppavai is "Vedam anaiththirkkum viththu". Even the explanation to this phrase itself is very difficult because Vedaas are Eternal or Anaadhi but Thiruppavai was sung at a later time. Just as the Seeds are the cause for the new trees, Vedaas themselves can be understood properly only with the Swapadesaartams (deeper and actual meanings)of Thiruppavai Paasurams. That is the Greatness of Aandaal and Her Paasurams.

I shall check up and let you know the Nrusimha Priya Contact soon.

My humble Anantakodi Pranaams to you for sparing your precious time and efforts to reply to my even very ordinary questions. I am realy dumbfounded on reading your highly Professional and Scholarly but down to the earth humility articles and replies.

Dear Mr Saminathan.
Glad to know that you are a long time reader of my blog. Thank you.
Coming to your question, there is evidence within Tolkappiyam itself of a connectivity between Tamil and Sanskrit. A nutshell of them can be seen in slides 57,58 and 59 in this ppt by me: https://www.scribd.com/document/367786787/Problems-in-the-assumption-and-methodology-of-Mahadevan-s-Indus-decipherment

I will expand them in a series of articles some time later.

Jayasree Saranathan said...

Thank you Ms Rama for your valuable inputs. I am saving them for use in my future article on Tamil- Sanskrit as co-borns.

For the present, I can give you the link to my research article on Tamil- Sanskrit and Pali having commonality.
Article title: "Pāzhi- Pāli- Māgadhā - Shāka Dweepa connection known from Tamil texts"
Link is http://jayasreesaranathan.blogspot.in/2017/06/6-pazhi-pali-magadha-shaka-dweepa.html

In this article I have shown the so-called 7 X 7 = 49 lands of Kuamri khandam matching with Shaka dweepa geography. That was the missing link after man moved out of Africa. That was peopled by Tamil speaking Vedic community which got dispersed in all directions due to successive deluges.

Another important article in this connection can be found in the side bar of this blog from the archives titled "Hanuman and Sita conversed in Madhura language (Spoken language of ancient India –part 3)" It shows that Tamil was the Manushya Bhadha during Rama's times and Sita and Hanuman conversed in Tamil in Ashoka vana. So much for the presence of Tamil throughout India as a spoken language.

At my present level of understanding there was a Proto-Tamil which could have been Pali or an early form of Pali. From that Proto-language, Tamil and Sanskrit were separated and enriched.

If we have the power to make them oblige, we could have made them remove the article from the website and got Vairamuthu seek pardon at Andal sannidhi. But they are hard nuts! So never think they will publish this rebuttal.

At the most TV debaters can use my material in the debates. One such person tweeted me showing the debate in Cauvery News in which he quoted my 2013 article on Daniel Selvaraj's derogatory work on Andal. But when he quoted mine, the moderator changed the topic.

I get a feeling that the moderator has read that article of mine as the same debator has already used my material in 2013 itself when Andal controversy came at that time. But the moderators want to keep the pot boiling. They will keep flinging abusive material on us, but once we produce some valid doc they would change topics and start with another issue. For them the only goal is to keep abusing Hinduism in some way and demoralize the debaters or interviewees with a volley of provocative questions. They don't want to find a solution to the issue, but only want to project us in bad light.

I don't have a hope that they will ever change. The material I have written is at best to keep ourselves assured that we are right and they are wrong. It is to educate ourselves.

An amazing article Madam ! Wonder how Sri Andal has transformed thro you to give such befitting reply to the Lyricist. The real truth is this entire event was pre planned one to defame our established beliefs and sentiments. Lot of requests were pouring to Dinamani much prior not to conduct this event especially with this Atheist Poet. Sources say both Editor Vaidhya and this Poet may be backed by some external forces planned maliciously to do it that too in auspicious Marghazi Month for HER. It really pains and none of us are able to do even our routine work or sleep. Even someone wishes to sleep it feels that our Matha Andal stands next to us and cries in HER child form. Several young girl children only known that their Thayar was defamed and continue pray before HER for some solace to all of us. ”Arasan Andru Kondran Deivam Nindru Kollam” - says one famous Tamil Proverb. It also really pains to see our elderly Ladies in the streets on Satvik Protest almost three weeks now. The Utmost sad thing is some people just pass the bug by saying Vairamuthu said Sorry, so we should ignore this issue. But as Jeeyar Swamis, Mutt Heads and ardent devotees clearly say it must be unconditional apology. I forwarded your nice articles to enormous people and now they truly realise the entire fake and mischievous intentions of Vairamuthu. Mr Saminathan,
Ancient indian tradition was mostly oral. This is true in both languages Tamil and Sanskrit. You can see that lot kurals of valluvar emphasize this

"The best wealth is your ability to listen and that is the wealth of wealth"

"When there is no food for the ear, it is time to reduce some for the stomach"

So it is clear that more importance was given to the spoken word than to the written. That is why we have the word Vaak.

This is true even in Sanskrit. The Veda is alternatively known as shruti. This is derived from the word shrotram which means ear. Shruti means that which is attained through hearing. When the word Kavi occurs in the word, it does not mean a poet that wrote poems but a poet who intuited the mantras in penance or sees/hears it in the innter space. Even in the Brihadaranyaka upanishad where the "Aham Brahmasmi" sentence comes, Yajnavalkya when teaching maitreyi says that the way to attain brahma jnana is "Shravana manana and nididhysana". So the first step is Shravana or to hear. This is similar to what tiruvalluvar says. Please read this article i wrote on this blog, depicting how powerful and scientific the oral system is
http://jayasreesaranathan.blogspot.in/2016/08/how-vedas-are-preserved-through-oral.html

So it is clear that written letters or characters were given lesser priority over the spoken word or vaak. Here note that "Letter" is not the same as varna or ezhuttu. Also in the ashtaadhyayi also when Panini talks about varnas, he describes in detail about the organ of origin( Sthanam), organ through which sound is heard(Karanam) and effort needed (prayatnam). There was no discussion about how to write a particular character as writing can be represented by any arbitrary system of characters and has no natural existence as the spoken word. Also in the oral traditions the very way the varnas are taught are different. When we learn to write Sanskrit we are generally taught to write the letters as
"A AA, I, I' ... Ka, Kha ga, Gha .."

But if you see the shiva sutras at the start of the ashtadhyayi you will see the varnas as
" A-I-U-N Ri-luk Ye-ong ...."
This is the order of the alphabets as taught in the karna paramparai. The specialty of this is that alphabets are grouped according to many properties. Panini also observes how various regions of India spoke Sanskrit. He says that the ladies selling buttermilk in the saurashtra area sell it by shouting "Takara(3)m", Takaram being Sanskrit for buttermilk. So the grammarians have observed spoken speech as it was living and not dead and lifeless as writing So in general you would see less of written manuscripts, archaeologically is my belief. But even so we have had the Ramayana and Mahabharata written in scripts. But even the transmission of those were oral. For example Lava Kusha sang the Ramayana in the Ashvamedha or Rama and suta pauranikas recited the puranas in yajnas of the Rishis. Nowhere does it say that Lava and Kusha read out the Ramayana or Pauranikas read out the puranas.

The IVC seems to be a community that grouped for a particular purpose. Dr Kalyanaraman says it was a Metallurgical civilization and the symbols used was for trade or some technical purposes. So generally serious learning was generally passed on orally and the rishis did not rely on writing.

This article is appearing in Thinnai internet magazine of this week. But its length seems have been curtailed.

I've read that, but before I finished reading the third para, many questions arose in me to which I sent my responses to the magazine, who, did not, however, allow them, advising me to send an article as a response to your article.

BTW, I've another point to make here, no matter whether likable or not. Vairamuthu is a mere poet. He is not a historian - even remotely, let alone of repute. He spoke as an individual and perhaps as a Tamil scholar, and the audience who gathered there, which included eminent religious men like the Srivilliputhoor Jeeyar and other bhaktas, to listen to his speech, did so only with the belief that they had come to listen to a lecture by a man interested in Tamil language and literature, not a man who is a historian. Further, history and religion can't live together - I mean history proper. So they didn't expect a historian to speak on Andaal. Dinamani also invited him as a speaker only because he is a poet interested in Andaal, as a poet.

Whatever that may be, the basic point is that he is an individual and his views are to be taken as those from an individual. In other words, he need not be an issue for scholars and historians like you. You are a great scholar in Tamil language, literature, esp. ancient literature an a historian specialising in religion and literature of Tamil as one understands from reading you. It is not necessary to take him as a target of your criticism. He is far lower than you.

If you are offended by his remarks on Andaal, it is right to rise in anger to attack him like the Muslims do when their religious icons are slandered or like the BJP leader or the disciples of Nithiyanda. That protest comes under another category namely religious wrath.

MR Vinayagam why cannot we show religious anger through scholarship? It atleast shows that Vairamuthu is a total numskull when it comes to History and the Tamil language(I am not talking of the cinematic edukai/monai songs but serious stuff like the sanga ilakkiyam). This is true of any Dravidian leader.

My replies to Mr P.Vinayagam.

//Not a single commenter here is outside your community. It goes against your wish namely people should be awakened. Which people? The writers here are already with you. They're already awakened. Watering plants already irrigated well?//

No one knows the community of the people who have written here. But what is common among them is that all of them are worshipers of Andal. There is a huge population which has read this blog but not left any comment. As of now only 0.0036% of the total number of readers of this blog has commented. It is less than half of this percentage for the previous blog. So what is the grade you are giving for 99.99% readers who have read and not commented - awakened or those who are already with me or something else?

//I've read that, but before I finished reading the third para, many questions arose in me to which I sent my responses to the magazine, who, did not, however, allow them, advising me to send an article as a response to your article.//

You can raise those questions here.

//BTW, I've another point to make here, no matter whether likable or not. Vairamuthu is a mere poet. He is not a historian - even remotely, let alone of repute.//

Tell this to Vauramuthu.

//He spoke as an individual and perhaps as a Tamil scholar, and the audience who gathered there, which included eminent religious men like the Srivilliputhoor Jeeyar and other bhaktas, to listen to his speech, did so only with the belief that they had come to listen to a lecture by a man interested in Tamil language and literature, not a man who is a historian.//

You wrote “He spoke..” Now I understand how much you know about the whole issue. You have just heard his speech, that is all, but didn’t read his article in Dinamani. Click the first two words of the above article, you will get into his article. Read that and then comment.

// Further, history and religion can't live together - I mean history proper. So they didn't expect a historian to speak on Andaal. Dinamani also invited him as a speaker only because he is a poet interested in Andaal, as a poet.//

Please correct your knowledge on history and religion and also on why Dinamani invited him to speak. I can’t help you with the former, but can say this for the later one on Dinamani. Vairamuthu is writing a regular column in Dinamani on some personality associated with Tamil. After that write-up appears, Dinamani arranges for a ‘Vaasippu’ –i.e., a reading of his article. On 8th Jan this article appeared in Edit page of Dinamani. The ‘vaasippu’ was organised on 10th Jan. Right from the pre-publishing state, Dinamani knows what is all this about.

//Whatever that may be, the basic point is that he is an individual and his views are to be taken as those from an individual. In other words, he need not be an issue for scholars and historians like you.//

He is not an individual. He has millions of ordinary folks as his fans behind him. What he writes now is going to become reference work and cited as truth later. That is the crux of the issue. If an X or Y or Z had written this, no one would have known it or even bothered – like the reference he quoted from a book on Andal. But when he gives credence to it and himself writes absolute untruth, that cannot be left un-refuted or un-challenged.

He is not an individual as we found how big-shots came to support his non-sense article and in the process established their own knowledge on the subject. When such well established people themselves have spoken so much nonsense, think about the impact of his article on ordinary folks.

Almost all his fans / readers are ordinary folks. They have read his article and have listened to him. Should they not know what is wrong with his article? Should they not be told how shallow his knowledge of Tamil is when it comes to analysing the Tamil of Andal? Vairamuthu may or may not have read my counter to his work. But I want everyone – including his fans to know that he has erred beyond doubt.

I don’t want to do character assassination of Vairamuthu as he has done to Andal. I want to lay bare the blunders in his article so that common folks including his fans should not be misled. At the same time my refutation should calm the minds of Andal adiyaars also - that they have effectively countered Vairamuthu’s affront. If you can read in between the lines of the comments, you can sense a great relief in their minds. It is not that 'I wrote' this article, you can sense that 'all these commmenters' also felt a part of having countered him through this article.

//If you are offended by his remarks on Andaal, it is right to rise in anger to attack him like the Muslims do when their religious icons are slandered or like the BJP leader or the disciples of Nithiyanda. That protest comes under another category namely religious wrath.//

Now I know your intentions and who you could be. Good bye.

From your comment it is obvious that you are not one among the 'community' you quote here. So you are not one among those already 'awakened' ones. I want people like you to read and question me. Please share this article with everyone you know and come here to debate with me.

Thanks for the response.

By the word 'community' I meant 'caste' of Tamil brahmins who live by and for sanatana religion: 'sanatana dharmists'' as you describe yourself and it's my point that they don't need to be awakened. All comments here are from them only; outside too, they're in a majority along with the Jeeyars and religious polticians so much so that the agitation is described in Scroll.in or the Wire, as one led by Tamil brahmins.

That being the situation here, (i.e. your blog is read only by them only), how is it possible for you to realize your ambition of creating awareness amongst all other people? Where're they? It's my question that went a-begging.

Next, the comments being of the same caste men and women, who are already 'awakened' souls, they will agree with you in toto. You'll never know about those areas in your arguments that are 'grey'. No man or no woman is perfect. All of us have 'grey areas''.
Taking such situations like these in view, Valluvar cautioned: ''

I've not come here to debate but to say the above point plus the other point namely you're a great scholar and a person of sound religious principles and he is a mere poet - a lowly vendor of words without any principles to live by. Contest should be between equals. A righteous woman vs unprincipled and ignorant man. It's not a contest but a burlesque.

Even if you want to create awareness about his faults, it is not being done as already explained above.

I've my own blog - both in English and Tamil - and I'm also putting up my articles in Thinnai. As I've not come here to debate, I don't discuss your points vis a vis his points vide his lecture or article. Of course, I'll be sending my response in the form of an article to the internet magazine Thinnai, which may be taken for debating with your points here. In the event it is not allowed, it will stand in my blog for your kind perusal and for others. In the meantime, you may take a dekko at my thinnai article ''தமிழ் இலக்கியமும் மதவாதிகளும்'' - திண்ணை 22.1.2018 as it takes a broad view on religious as well as literary Don Quixote-s of Tamil Nadu.

Thanks for your response again. Usually I am blocked. Here you allow it still which is a pleasant surprise.

I'm yet to read your Thinnai article. Therefore, it is presumptuous to say As you can see, I have already written that I'd read only the first three paras therein and the questions that the paras provoked in me were many, and my responses to them were sent to Thinnai but it didn't allow them perhaps because they wanted me to read the whole article, or my responses were too lengthy and their rightful place should be in a separate article.

I won't post my article here - as it is comments column where attempting to insert article-like write-ups are audacious acts. Don't attempt please to make me aware of Srivaishnavite thoughts: I'm au fait with it. I read articles like yours only for intellectual pleasure and respond to it, again, for the same. Your target readership should extend beyond Tamil brahmins - that was my point earlier. I'm not going to serve you as your mouth-piece. I'm not interested in religious disputations. Those interested in Andaal, can do so like you; or take your article everywhere. Andaal will go forward to many many generations whether you have written or not. Her two books will ensure that. Tamil is an ever-lasting language.

As for the caste of the commenters here, I leave it to your conscience. Or, you can take me for pointing out that they are your fellow sanatana dharmists. Indeed, it is a safer way to avoid referring to caste directly.

Mr P Vinayagam, Namaskaram. Yes I am Proud Hindu BRAHMIN representing a Forum with ALL SECTIONS of Hindus. I am also well known person in the Society and thanks to YOUR innocent Poet for uniting all of US now having clear agenda to address all core issues of our Pride Hinduism.

You PRETEND here as if one Community is responding to Madam’s article. Pl accept that you are yet to go thro even basic crest of Sri Andal Controversy. You also seem to be close to Poet so pl advice him to just speak about MATHAS of other Religion and rest they will take care.

People are very clear in social media not to divert this ANDAL subject with fake intention to abuse only Brahmins as Sri Andal is Tamil Goddess too. In simple words Atheists are persons who don’t believe in any form of Worship but past one year they seem to abuse only our sentiments and beliefs, Why ?

Vairamuthu is Lyricist for Cinema so let him to sit at home write romance songs but blabbering in Public Forum without any basic inputs about our Goddess and Lord Ram too is malicious & unacceptable. He used Tamil only for commercial benefits fully and can you list his contributions to Tamil Society ?

Shame on Poet to hold Function in 5 star hotel (Broker owned) for just donating Rs 5 Lacs whereas a real poor retired Tamil Teacher in Madurai donated Rs 5 Lacs two months back and when we wished to meet him he replied that we are welcome but should not thank him or bring even a fruit to his house. So Dramas of Poet with crocodile tears will not yield any result.

Now, we are ready to arrange open Debate with Vairamuthu and other ATHEISTS supporting him in any 5 star Hotel (as he claims Poor Poet but prefers only LUXURY) with Media on LIVE so pl ask his convenience ? but we are very confident that any TRUE TAMIL POET with self esteem will give back all his AWARDS after this Debate. Good luck to you and ILLICIT POET (my compliment)

Smt.Jayasree Saranathan,

Please let me compliment you for your well-researched and well documented essay on Andal Nachiyar and exposing the hollowness of pseudo poet, self-styled kaviperarsu Vairamuthu. Your article has wonderfully driven home the fact that he neither knows Tamil nor Andal's Tamil and their inherent meanings. The pseudo poet had, perhaps, the need to undermine the greatness of Divine mother Andal , at the behest of his masters paying him for this type of misinformation campaign.

Your judicious quoting about Kannagi, together with her husband Kovalan going in pushpaka vimanam and disappearing is dealt in detail in Silappathikaram, which is not disputed by this pseudo Tamil zealot.
There is a saying :"Believe what you don't see; the benefit of which you will see what you believed". Either he must be knowledgeable or he must enrich his knowledge learning from learned scholars.

There cannot be a big fraud than his claim that he had researched Andal. As you have rightly pointed out what has he researched? Andal's works or Andal's life? He claims he is a Tamil. If that be so, does he not know "Yepporul yaar yaar vai ketpinum apporul meipporul kanbathu arivu".
Must he not have this sense?

For eking out his livelihood, he needs Andal's and Azhwars" pasurams and his Tamil is not helping him. The focus, undercurrent and aims and objectives of Nachiyaar Thirumozhi are not understood by him; but he chose to trivialise it by declaring it as soaked in 'Kama rasam'. Beauty lies in eyes. As one who scribbles some lines for cinema can see absurd, ugly and vulgar things in everything and it is aghast that such a person had tried to research Andal Nachiyar.

Your well researcheed and well documented essay is timely and correct rebuttal, thus straightening up the record. Your contribution is a great and yeomen service to the Vaishnavite world and the Tamil race, in particular. I stand up to salute you in reverence and all vaishnavites will feel proud of you.

I think I have covered almost all the absurdities. If anything is left please let me know, I will take them up.

Read the link Mr Ramanathan. Brazen and bold acts such as these can't happen without political and police support. I find the fire at Meenakshi temple as an omen for the anger of Meenakshi at the happenings in the state.

Dear Jayasree Maam,
Yours is a yeoman service to the Sanathana Dharma. Rebutting the nasty hatred politics of Tamil using Our Own Tamil is the best tactic to handle these nitwits. They are working with a motive and people like you are really Divine blessings to counter them.
Your blog on Thamizhan Dravidana is simply an exemplary work.
I have been your fan since I started following your Astrolgy articles in Tamilhindu.com
At the time of writing this comment, I am getting news about VM’s ‘Thamizhaatrupadai’. Ofcourse, he is going to create controversies with this. Don’t you think it is the right time to start a very good series (clarifying controversies about Hinduism)in a popular magazine (probably Thuglak) so as to educate the teenagers of today

Jayasree Saranathan said...

Thanks Mr Saami.
I am happy to note that you have read my articles in Thamizhan dravidnaa series. Mine is only a squirrel's contribution done in the way I know.

VM has already said that all these articles that he is writing in Dinamani are going to be published as a book, Thamizh aaRRuppadai. My contention is that this article on Andal should not be included in that. Who will listen to this? Even those who are heard, like H Raja was heard saying that VM wrote well in the beginning of his article and faltered only at the end - in the issue of naming Andal so and so (don't want to mention that by my mouth or my finger tips even to type it). When will they know that the whole article was derogatory? Though I sent my articles to H. Raja, to Vairamuthu to Dinamani and a host of other dignitaries, I don't think any one of them had read them. Except Dinamani I sent to others through tweet. If someone has access to them directly or through email, please pass on these articles.

All I can say is that one must be fortunate enough even to get knowledge and the right knowledge. Those who are destined will land up at right knowledge. Other wont. As for me I will keep writing what I know, but wont go to people asking them to publish mine. In this particular topic on Andal, I am thinking of bringing out a free e-book. That is the maximum I can do from my side.

Dear Ma’am’,

It is indeed very saddening to know that such great voices are falling on deaf ears. I have been following your Twitter handle also with my handle @ChendurSaami and found that that most of your tweets, pertaining to this topic, where yo have tagged popular people have gone unnoticed by them. I will earnestly make an attempt to try for publishing this in some vernacular print media. I have some contacts and let me see whether my efforts become fruitful with the grace of Lord Balasubramanya of Tiruchendur.

I will revert once there is any headway. May I have your email or other contacts so that I can reach you. My email Id : devergreen@gmail.com. If you have a .pdf file of the articles please do send it.

As you correctly said, those who are destined for the divine blessings only get it. E- Book is a very good idea. Please carry on with your great work for the benefit of people like us.

You yourself admitted above that you write in two names. Are you writing in your original name, given by your parents in the comments of thinnai.com? Does Thinnai editor know that P.Vinayagam and BSV are one and the same? Does Thinnai editor know that the face of Vinayagam is different from that of BSV who spews venom on Hinduism in the comments? Are the 'forum members' writing there are one or many? Are they doing debates or spitting venom?

Good that you admit that you rejected Krishna kumar. But you yourself had written above on Feb 2nd , 9-48 PM as follows:

No they can identify me well. I've been writing in Thinnai for many years: not only on religion but on tamil lit also. My name is Bala Sundara Vinayagam (jadgagappeyar). Officially it is P Vinayagam. Thinnai readers know me well. I don't get anything by hiding myself. After all, I don't write personal things but social matters. Why should one hide oneself to say that Tamil saint poets were appropriated by Brahmins of Tamilnadu.

I don't want to write here because it is a fortress of Brahmins mostly along with like-minded non-brahmins. There cannot be a fair exchange of views. If I disagree with you, others, including you, will indulge in personal attacks on me.

So, thinnai is the level playing field. Read me there and respond to my views.

// take exception to the communal virus Mr. Vinayagam is injecting into this forum//

Dear Mr Srinivasan,

No it's not a communal virus. In Indian English, communal refers to religious groups. There was a communal clashes yesterday - if the newspaper reports, it means two religious groups came to clash there. Clashes between castes are called caste clashes.

We are discussing religion - a Hindu saint - among Hindus only. Christians and Muslims are keeping off. They may be enjoying the show. A debate among Hinuds is not injecting communal virus. It is exchange of views.

I, for one, never accept the idea of Brahmins usurping Tamil poets. It was made clear here, in my article already cited by Mrs Saranathan and my innumerable comments in Thinnai.

You may agree with all Mrs Saranathan writes and thankful to her for writing as you wish. I can't because she writes fanatically to defend her religion sanatana dharma. I said 'her religion' because it is one of the many sects in the Hindu religion and all Hindus do not subscribe to it. I am not a sanatana dharmist. Period.

If you are broadminded to accept the basic fact that governs the religion namely every one is accommodated in the vast canvass of the religion, keep off from my views. Live within your sect as fanatical as a Muslim.

BTW, dear Srinivasan, to be a brahmin or non-brahmin does not bring any credt to anyone. One must live according to the religion whichever caste he is. Our deeds decide our worth.

Thanks and Regards.

The above paras are rewritten here-in-below with corrections:

If you are not broadminded ....etc.

To be a brahmin or a non-brahmin does not bring any credit to anyone. It is the machination of Sanatana Dharmists to have created the impression that to be a brahmin is a credit. Don't believe them. Lets reject their varnashradharma which entailed the caste system. Hindu society should be free from the caste virus.

It looks from your comments both here and thinnai.com, that you are the worst infected by caste virus, not us. Everything that you see/write, you see it with a crooked caste lens.

I have written in Thinnai as well to counter your views which is waiting for moderator's approval. Nammalzhwar celebrated as the alwar who spoke the highest meanings of Vedas in Tamil was from Vellala kulam.

Hope you have heard of the story of Yudhistrar and Duryodhana being sent around Hastinapur with following mandates:
Yudhistrar was to find a bad man in Hastinapur
Duryodhana was to find a good man in Hastinapur

Ydhistrar could not find even one bad man and Duryodhana could not find even one good man.

You relate everything to caste because you are inflicted by caste virus. We are telling you from the beginning that our Alwars/Nayanmaars were great because they spoke divine Truths. Sanathana Dharmathil Rishi mulam/nadhi mulam naangal paarpathillai.

The question is why are you writing the comments in thinnai as BSV and in another name also (which I can prove) and not in your own name Vinayagam. WHY does a person NEED one name for writing articles of certain nature and different names for comments (in all 4 in thinnai) that are of a particular nature. With that you are questioning rk why he is not writing in his name? Why this double standard?

You wrote,
//Why should one hide oneself to say that Tamil saint poets were appropriated by Brahmins of Tamilnadu. //

This is a wrong idea and not found in my article, but you will be getting replies in thinnai, to show how you are wrong. But what about the whole lot of nasty things you have been writing there in other names? Get those comments read by Vairamuthu himself and see his reaction. He would not care to open thinnai.com any more, particularly if written by BSV, Shally, Vendan Arasu and Joseph.

From Manimegalai:

1. ALavai-vaadhi (அளவைவாதி) – everything in some measurements. The religious head of this Thought identifies Veda Vyasa, Kruthakoti (Bhodayana) and Jaimini as the teachers of this Thought.

2. Saiva-vaadhi (சைவவாதி) – Saivism. Shiva as the supreme Lord

3. Brahma-vaadhi (பிரம்மவாதி) – Brahma as the supreme Lord

4. VaiNava- vaadhi (வைணவவாதி) – Vaishnavism. Here there is a specific mention of Vishnu Purana. The author says ‘the one who had read and understood the Purana of Vishnu explained Vaishnavism to Manimegalai.

This shows that the text of Vishnu Purana had existed before the start of the Common Era. It was not a later day text as claimed by many.

5. Veda-vaadhi (வேதவாதி)– Vedas as supreme.

6. Aseega-vaadhi (ஆசீகவாதி) – The narrator, the chief of Aseega sect quotes his views from his religious text called “Nava kadhir” (நவ கதிர்) authored by “MaRkali devan” (மற்கலி தேவன்). The precepts sound close to Jainism. This could have been a branch of Jainism.

7. Niganda-vaadhi (நிகண்டவாதி) – Jainism. The narrator claims his Lord as Arugan (அருகன்).

8. Sankhya-vaadhi (சாங்கியவாதி) – Sankhya philosophy.

9. Vasisedika-vaadhi (வைசேடிகவாதி) – Vaiseshika philosophy.

10. Bhootha-vaadhi (பூதவாதி) – Charvaka philosophy.

Having heard from 10 different Heads of Thought, the chapter closes with a line that Manimagalai had thus learned about 5 religions! Manimegalai 27 – 269). The 10 Thoughts or precepts have been shrunk into 5 religions. They have been listed above. The 6th religion is Buddhism.

The 5 religions from the above 10 are
1. Charvaka
2.Jaina (Aseega +Niganda)
3.Saiva
4.Vaishnava
5. Veda (Brahma + Vaiseshika + Sankhya + ALavai)

The 6th was Buddhism.

But by the end of the first Millennium of the Common Era, the Tamil society (Azhwars and Nayanmars) had rejected Jainism and Buddhism also as they did not concur with Vedic Thought. So what it conveys is that Vedic Thought alone forms the basis of culture of Tamils from antiquity. Any attempt to derail it was resisted until Vedic culture was restored in toto. Only Saivism and Vaishnavism continued as they are two sides of the same Vedic culture.

Any attempt to bring in religion other than these would not have the sanction of ancient Tamils. Those who bring in other religions and belong to other religions cannot claim themselves as part of this Tamil stream.

Particularly Kannagi would not have accepted other religions. Her final advice to Ilango reveals that:

She says, செல்லும் தேஎத்துக் குறுதுணை தேடுமின் - means 'do good karma to get a good rebirth'. This is nothing but core concept of Sanatana Dharma - something reiterated by Tiruvalluvar also in ஊழ் adhikaram.

If you dont understand this, it is your ஊழ். You can keep happily multiplying your ஊழ் by writing the kind of stuff that you are writing in Thinnai in many names. If you want to bring that stuff here, you have no place here.

A rational debate or discussion can be engaged with only between persons who share certain commonly accepted principles. The purpose of such an engagement is mutual enlightenment. Ignorance can be remedied, but prejudice cannot be erased by rational arguments. This is evident in the case of Mr. Vinayagam, whose prejudice against brahmins is evident from his postings. As a non-brahmin, I find any caste prejudice to be as evil as Nazism, for Hitler's hatred of Jews led to the horrendous crimes of genocide in the last century. The activities of certain anti-brahmin leaders of many decades ago verged on Nazi tactics. I thought such hate-mongering has died down, but apparently the potential for their resurgence is always there.

I will not engage with any further interaction with such persons and what follows is addressed to genuine seekers of knowledge.

Most educated Tamils know that it was the Herculean efforts of U.V. Saminatha Iyer that saved many ancient Tamil Sangam works from oblivion. He not only collected the palm-leaf manuscripts of countless great works of Tamil literature, edited and published them. About a thousand years ago another saintly brahmin made it a life quest to recover the divinely-inspired poetry of the great Azhvar saints. His name was Natha Muni or Ranganatha Muni. At a chance encounter at the Tirukkudanthai temple of Sarngapani Perumal, he was so moved to hear just ten poems of Nammazhvar's Tiruvaimozhi that he resolved to dedicate his life to learn the rest of the more than thousand poems of the Azhvar. His quest led ultimately to the re-discovery of the bhakthi-soaked poems of Nalayira Divya Prabandham and its wide dissemination among all who were interested, regardless of caste.

So here is the example of two brahmins who published great Tamil works to the benefit of the entire Tamil-speaking world.

http://jayasreesaranathan.blogspot.in/2012/03/were-brahmins-bad-sequel-to.html

The series does not end and has to continue. What is to be continued was written in another context - on a Brahmin in whose times castes emerged. That Brahmin was none other than Parashurama. Read here: http://jayasreesaranathan.blogspot.in/2014/04/castes-that-helped-parashurama-mundas.html

The article written by Mr Ramanathan in my blog "How difficult is the life of a brahmana?" should not be missed. In the comment section of that article I have produced data from colonial period to show that Brahmins did not appropriate opportunities from others. The fact is that the less number of Brahmins who had the best of modern education shone very well and that created an impression that Brahmins grabbed all opportunities.

My Tamil article on how non-Brahmins dominated the Sangam literature. Brahmins were behind them as teachers and not competitors:

Beautiful, wise words by Mr Muthukrishnan Srinivasan!

A heartfelt appeal to those objective and logical readers of Smt Jayasree Saranathan’s blog articles:

Ref: Mr BSV’s (or Mr Vinayagam’s or Mr Whatever-be-his-name’s) invite to Thinnai.com to read his articles and his replies to counterarguments

Even if you’re slightly tempted that you might be able to offer Mr BSV solid facts that he'd consider and analyze, let me assure you that you will be MUCH MORE than disappointed.

Unless you want to do 1 or more of the following, kindly DO NOT accept his invite:
1. Experience a funny combination of amusement and exasperation (Imagine yourself grimacing and grinning simultaneously for about half an hour :-))
2. Roll and narrow your eyes and raise your eyebrows at an alarming frequency

He WANTS to believe that Hindus (especially Brahmins) are an arrogant, stealthy, harassing lot and it certainly looks like he doesn’t WANT this dearest belief of his to be broken by trivial things like facts and logic.

Thereby his replies will have only these tiresome features:
1. Selective answering: 0 answers to facts & logic (but he’ll accuse you of slithering away from answering!)
2. Selective quoting from sacred texts about Acharyas and conveniently leaving out other facts pertaining to the very same Acharya in the very same text
3. Colouring the words of Azhwars & Acharyas with his personal religious-cum-caste bias or prejudice
4. Meticulous focus on non-issues like answers in English, online Thamizh typing skills, Thamizh typos, English grammar (but he’ll write English words in Thamizh :)) but zilch focus on the crux of the debate per se!
5. Contradicting his own statements across replies within the same website (leave alone across websites!)
6. Justifying a specific yardstick for non-Hindus while denying the very same yardstick for Hindus!

BTW, special thanks to respected Ramia who made a REAL sincere attempt to achieve the impossible i.e. make the likes of Mr BSV see facts for what they are.

In fact, the main reason for my long rebuttal was Mr BSV's sweeping statement about Sri Alavandhar - "Alavandhar lived in the Chozha king's palace and had the king's support due to which his commentaries were preserved."

1. When did Sri Alavandhar / Acharyas before Him document the commentaries?? If there were documents then why did Sri Udayavar & Sri Thirumaalai Aandaan debate over the meaning of Azhwar's verses??

2. The documentation process was started only by Sri Udayavar with Sri Pillaan writing 6000 Padi. Who patronage helped Them then?? Have They thanked those "sponsors" in Their works? Any Temple inscriptions?

Our Acharyas are vairaagya sheelargaL. They would never depend on a local king as the Lord of the Universe is already on Their side.

It's sad that so much of questionable things are being said about those Sadhus.

Will anyone who really has thorough knowledge of post-Ramanuja history of Sri Vaishnavism investigate the baseless claim that commentaries on Azhvar Arulichcheyal works by non-brahmins have been suppressed by brahmins? Let us just stick to facts and justify any claims with authentic evidence.

Specifically,

1. Who were the non-brahmins who authored such commentaries? Were they generated and propagated by oral tradition or were they ever written down? Give names, dates and real details, not baseless opinions.

2. Who 'suppressed' these commentaries, if such ever existed? How or by what means did they attempt to suppress them and how did they succeed in suppressing them? Again, no wild claims, only facts backed by evidence, please.

I will not believe such claims unless proved with clear evidence. Moreover, as a non-brahmin I hold that blaming an entire community, brahmin, in this case, is as much a crime as nazism as I had written earlier. Even if one could prove that some particular individual belonging to a certain community had committed a crime, how could we accept blaming the whole community to be criminals?

Besides, I do know of a modern non-brahmin Sri Vaishnavite Scholar whose commentary on Tiruviruttam has been praised by a great brahmin Acharya, disproving the nonsensical claim that such commentaries were"suppressed"

Kindly take 10 mins to go through this brief article of mine (http://mennadaiannam.blogspot.in/2018/02/blog-post.html) and let me know your valuable views.

References for the facts I've stated in the above-mentioned article:

1. Post-Ramanujar History (Nampillai onwards): Yatindra Pravana Prabhavam by Sri U.Ve.V.V.Ramanujam Swami

2. Pre & During Ramanujar Life History: 6000 padi Guru Parampara Prabhavam as published by Sri U.Ve.Krishnaswami Iyengar Swami (aka Putthur Swami)

3. Sri Kambar History: Upanayasams I had heard by Dr.DA Joseph Ramanujadasar (http://www.dajoseph.com)

Here are some of my replies to your queries:

1. As far as I know, w.r.t. commentaries, no non-Brahmin Swami wrote any commentary.

Sri Vilancholaippillai authored Saptha Gathai, a personal favourite of mine, which is part of all Thenkalai Nithyanusandhanam books i.e. it's meant for daily recital & contemplation.

Note: I can think of many Brahmins who wrote commentaries for works of / works praising non-Brahmins though! Examples: All Azhwar pasuram urais, Sri Parashara Bhattar for the great Sri Nampaduvan, etc.

2. Well, none. :-) In fact, Sri Vachana Bhushanam & Acharya Hrudayam were books written to PROVE that Sri Vaishnavas are above petty things like caste and that Thamizh paasurams are at least equal, if not superior, to Vedas!

// Besides, I do know of a modern non-brahmin Sri Vaishnavite Scholar whose commentary on Tiruviruttam has been praised by a great brahmin Acharya, disproving the nonsensical claim that such commentaries were"suppressed" //

Could you kindly share details, if alright?

A few additional references in similar lines that proves every Jivathma is most welcome to practise and talk about Sri Vaishnavam:

Smt. K.G. Dhouhithri's blog titled குருபக்தி and her posting on March 7, 2018 are enough to refute the baseless claims on the suppression of certain commentaries on the Divya Prabandhams. While I do not want to continue discussions on the insidious topic of caste in relation to the divine poetry of the Azhvars and the equally God-inspired commentaries of the great acharyas, I would just like readers to know of the contribution of less well-known writers that I am familiar with.

A commentary in simple Tamil for Tiruviruttam, by Vidwan Venkatasami Reddiar, Published by Srimad Andavan Asramam in 1984 and given an appreciative introduction by the great acharya, Tirukkudanthai Andavan Swami.

Explanation of selected verses of Tiruvaimozhi in the light of Nampillai's Eedu. This book is much sought after by scholars as it is also a work of research on literary aspects of Tiruvaimozhi. The author has discussed the many commentaries on Tiruvaoimozhi in the first part of the book.

This is a collection of radio lectures on selected verses of Tiruvaoimozhi.

Then there is the well-known work by Professor B.R. Purushothama Nayadu which comprises a translation of the Eedu into simple Tamil. This was published by the University of Madras in 10 volumes. Even a brahmin acharya I know has used these volumes for conducting Eedu kalakshepams to his disciples.

Books on the rich tradition of commentarial works such as "வைணவ உரை வளம்", by Dr. N. Subbu Reddiar, a book on the same topic by D. Gnanasundaram (whose Tamil translation of the first 2 decades of Periya Tirumozhi was published by Thanjai Tamil University) may be referred to for further study.

There is absolutely no mention by any of the non-brahmin scholars I know about the suppression of any previous commentaries

In the absence of any credible evidence , let us close this chapter on caste issues unnecessarily injected into the discussions.

Beautiful, concise, complete summary of what I tried to say in several paragraphs!

Thanks a ZILLION for the awesome information on other sweet contributions! From whatever Sri Muthukrishnan has neatly explained, Their intent is clear - They want to bring out the beauty of the divine poems and They want to share the golden meanings with one and all (given that மணிப்ரவாள நடை of Purvacharyas can be quite hard to understand for people like us). These are actually great kainkaryams by those Sri Vaishnavas.

// There is absolutely no mention by any of the non-brahmin scholars I know about the suppression of any previous commentaries. //

I rest my case.

Yes, please. Those elite Jivathmas have set unbeatable benchmarks for us in devotion, humility, wisdom, lifestyle and ethics. Discussing silly & dumb attributes like Their caste, etc. is indeed a shame.
