67% turnout in TN by-polls
Over 67 poll percentage was recorded in the bypolls.
Cumbum registered the maximum of 77 per cent while Thondamuthur polled 59 per cent.
Bargur and Srivaikuntam polled 72 per cent each while the Ilayangudi constituency recorded 67 per cent.
Gudalur municipality in Cumbum constituency that registered an impressive 82.3 per cent polling had only five negative votes cast, official sources said.
In fact, the DMK southern satrap M.K.Alagiri's specific order, according to party sources, was to ensure high percentage of voter turnout and negligible percentage of negative voting.
In Cumbum, where the DMK focused its energies on more than the other constituencies, 1,10,700 votes were polled, against a total of 1,45,673 votes. Though Mr N. Ramakrishnan resigned the MLA post that he had won on an MDMK ticket, he switched over to the DMK only to be fielded by it again in the by-poll.
DMK functionaries were a little disappointed as "we were asked to ensure 80 percent polling" in Cumbum where the voter turnout was only 69.5 percentage in the 2006 Assembly elections.
The overwhelming enthusiasm of the electorate to vote in the Srivaikundam by-election in Thoothukudi district seemed to mock the AIADMK that boycotted the by-polls. Ms Jayalalithaa's call to use 49 (0) failed to evoke a response as only two in the whole of Srivaikundam constituency had used the provision till 3 pm.
Polling percentage that was at 68.54 at 4 pm went up to 71.17 with 82,991 votes polled, just half-an hour before closing time.
